Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 23: Survival of the Fittest

I have mixed thoughts on this season finale. In some ways, I’m satisfied with the way the episode wrapped things up, but I also feel like things were a bit rushed. Like, for example, I feel like it was way too easy to kill Dick Roman. Like, don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the stuff with the leviathans is over, but they crammed way too much stuff into this episode. I mean, we had demon contract negotiation, the creation of a mystical weapon, Bobby’s death, and the destruction of the leviathans all in one episode. TOO MUCH. I feel like we needed an entire episode just to say goodbye to Bobby. I know that he’s going full vengeful spirit and all that, but I wasn’t quite ready to let go of him. Not yet. Although, I am SUPER disappointed that he decided to possess that maid. That was shameful behavior, Bobby. Shameful. Still, it’s tough for me to accept that Bobby is dead and gone forever. It really hurts me, you know? However, aside from Bobby’s death, the rest of the episode was a bit boring...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 22: There Will Be Blood

This might make me a bad Supernatural fan, but I think I’ve had it with vampires. Seriously, every time they’re on the show things get weighed down and tedious. I just don’t want to deal with them anymore; I can’t be bothered to follow all those plot points. Like, take this episode for instance, I couldn’t care less about all the vampire politics happening in the alpha’s palace. I think I absorbed enough of that when I was reading Twilight at age twelve. (Although, I do like that the alpha vampire told Sam and Dean that he’d see them next season. You have to admit that that was cute.) There! I said it. And now I wash my hands of vampires. So, let’s see, what else is going on in this episode? Well, obviously, we have to be concerned about Bobby. I appreciate that he’s still around in the show, but the fact that he possessed the maid was very disturbing. I’m very disappointed that Bobby is going over to the dark side, but I guess I can’t be too surprised. I mean, if I died the way that ...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 21: Reading Is Fundamental

Now this is what I call an EPISODE. Honestly, it was soooo good. It had basically everything: humor, drama, emotional moments, and it really contributed to the plot too! Plus, there were just so many good LINES. “I'm in advanced placement. Please don't kill me” is going to be my new catchphrase (just in case you’re wondering, I was in advanced placement in high school, but I was nowhere near as bright and motivated as our dude Kevin). Not to mention that everything Cas said was hilarious. I love him calling Meg to tell her that he’s surrounded by angry dogs. The random weirdness of it all is just perfection. Speaking of Meg and Cas, their relationship has taken a somewhat adorable turn. I like Meg as the reluctant care taker, even though I am 100% confident that she’s just trying to use Castiel. But still, who would have thought that a muddled, mentally ill angel and a snarky demon could be so cute together? We should take a few minutes to talk about Cas, I suppose. I think thi...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 20: The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo

My friends, I think Supernatural may have reached its pinnacle. I simply cannot imagine how any episode could be better than this one. I mean, come on, it has everything! There’s suspense, mystery, action, humor, and fun new characters. I LOVED it. Speaking of things I loved, I have to give the writers mad props for creating Charlie’s character. She is AMAZING. Felicia Day was a great choice for the character, she really hit it out of the park. I know that Charlie told the Winchesters never to contact her again, but I really hope they do because she’s just such a great character, and she has mad skills. Like, she beat Frank in coding. That’s impressive. And, like, she’s practically a hunter already! Okay. Now that I’ve GUSHED, we should talk about the actual episode. In this episode, the Winchesters discover that someone is trying to hack into Frank’s hard drive. They track it back to Charlie, who is a programmer for Dick Roman’s company. Dean and Sam manage to convince her that levi...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 19: Of Grave Importance

Oh my goodness, BOBBY! BOBBY! Bobby is breaking my heart in this episode! Like, I can’t even deal with all these feelings. I am both really happy that Bobby is still with them and heartbroken that he is a ghost and will eventually deteriorate and become a monster. Plus, I’m angry at Dean and Sam for not accepting ghost Bobby, but, at the same time, I do agree that he’s violating the natural order of things. Like I said, I don’t know how to feel about it. This episode was also kind of disturbing as a whole. In case you need a recap, Sam and Dean begin investigating some sort of ghost mansion where another hunter—Annie—has gone missing. It turns out that the former owner of the mansion, a ghost, kills anyone who comes into the mansion and holds on to their ghost in order to fuel himself with ghostly energy. This murderer ghost has a secret room where he stores the bodies so that no one will be able to set the ghosts free. It turns out that Annie is now a ghost in the house, and she work...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 18: Party On, Garth

So, I think the important takeaway from this episode is….BOBBY IS BACK! (!!!!!!!!) I mean, I kind of suspected that he was a ghost based on some other things that happened over the course of the past few episodes, but STILL! I almost can’t believe it. It was kind of shocking to see ghost Bobby just chilling out in their motel room. It gave my heart a bit of a jolt. I feel bad that he’s not able to talk to them or tell them that he’s still around. However, it might be for the best because I’m not sure how Sam and Dean would react to seeing Bobby in the flesh again. My assumption is that he’s attached to the flask, so Dean had better hold on tight to that thing! Anyway. I imagine they’re going to address the whole “Bobby is a ghost” situation in greater detail later on, so let me actually discuss what happened in the episode. In case you missed it, this episode revolves around a series of mysterious deaths perpetrated by a Japanese alcohol spirit. It seems that the owners of a brewery ch...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 17: The Born-Again Identity

Alert the presses! CAS IS BACK! Guys, I cannot describe how much this excites me. I suspected that Cas wasn’t permanently dead (because he’s died and come back so many times), but I was still thrilled to see him back on the show. I know the last time we saw him he was a vengeful god, but I’ve already forgiven him everything. No one can stay angry with Castiel. I mean, he’s CAS. The minute they started talking about Emmanuel the healer, I was like “that’s going to be Cas, amiright?” And, I was right! And, I gotta say, amnesia Castiel was ADORABLE. He’s like a sweet little baby who just wants to help people! INFANT CAS. I kind of wish he could have stayed like that. Plus, I think this is the only time we’ve seen him wearing something besides a trenchcoat. He’s rocking that sweater. Anyway, I’m feeling some kind of way about this episode. It was just so EMOTIONAL! First of all, you had Sam in a psychiatric ward, almost DYING because of Lucifer! I mean, that was pretty horrifying. (Althoug...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 16: Out with the Old

Man, those real estate agents were brutal. I mean, I’ve had bad bosses in my life, but I’ve never wanted to eat one of them! On the other hand, the cannibalistic impulse of leviathans is probably the only reason Sam and Dean are alive right now. Plus, Joyce and George were VASTLY entertaining; I love their forays in office politics while trying to take over the world, one shady property deal at a time. They are hilariously incompetent. In case you need a recap, in this episode Sam and Dean investigate a series of cursed objects that have all come from the same shop. Fortunately, Sam and Dean are able to round up all the items before the carnage becomes too bad (although there is one BRUTAL ballet slipper murder). In the process, however, they learn that there are some suspicious real estate deals going on. All the stores on the street are being sold to one particular agent (Joyce, she of the obnoxious coffee order). After some investigating—with the help of Fran—Sam and Dean learn that...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 15: Repo Man

I’ve tolerated a lot of creepy and disturbing stuff from Supernatural , but this episode crossed a line for me. THEY KILLED THE DOG! If there is one thing I can’t tolerate from movies or TV shows, it’s killing the pets. Now, THAT is going too far. That’s not to say that the rest of the episode wasn’t disturbing because it absolutely was. In case you need a recap, this episode centers around a case that Dean and Sam worked four years previously. They encountered a demon-possessed man who was killing women in horrifying ways. They were able to rid him of the demon, but years later the deaths started again, leading Sam and Dean to believe that the demon was back. It turns out that that wasn’t the case though. Instead, the man who the demon had possessed decided to start killing women on his own. So...THAT’S DISTURBING. The man, Jeffrey, captures Dean and reveals that he always wanted to kill women, but didn’t have the confidence to do it until he became possessed. He decides to summon the...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 14: Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie

This episode was disturbing...but also fun? Like, I don’t know how else to describe being impaled by a unicorn. In case you missed it, in this episode the Winchesters investigate a string of strange deaths and discover that children’s worst fears are coming to life and killing their parents. (I know, I can’t imagine what child would be afraid of a unicorn either). They trace the deaths back to Plucky Pennywhistle's, which seems to be kind of like Chuck E. Cheese. It turns out that one of the employees basically went crazy because he didn’t get a promotion and decided to use hoodoo to murder parents that he didn’t like. He tries to kill Sam too (using killer clowns!!!), but fortunately Dean is able to stop him in time. However, the clowns do explode, covering Sam with glitter, which, I gotta say, was pre-tty hilarious. Dean had the line of the episode with this one: “You look like you got attacked by some PCP-crazed strippers.” Like I said, this episode was kind of dark, but also en...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 13: The Slice Girls

Well, this episode was FASCINATING. I’m not sure why, but it really drew me in for some reason. I was genuinely super interested in the Amazon society, and I wanted to learn more about it. Maybe I need to watch the Wonder Woman movie or something. In case you need a recap, Sam and Dean arrive in Seattle to investigate a series of extremely weird, ritualistic murders. They discover that the killings are being committed by the Amazons, a tribe of warrior women who have super strength. It turns out that the Amazons can only reproduce if the child (which grows up super quickly) kills her father. Unfortunately, Sam and Dean only learn this after Dean mates with an Amazon. (Oops!) Dean’s daughter shows up to kill him, and, naturally, things get messy. I did think that it was really tragic that Sam needed to kill Dean’s daughter. Part of me really wanted to believe that she did want to get away from the Amazons. I was half hoping that she could start a new life, but I guess the lesson is: onc...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 12: Time After Time

Man, Dean looked good in that suit, didn’t he?  I hope the network used the promo shots from that episode to promote the show; I would totally buy a poster with Dean dressed up in his 1940s clothes. Anyway, now that we’ve gotten the fashion portion of this commentary out of the way, I should tell you that I had never heard of Eliot Ness or the Untouchables before, so a lot of stuff in this episode went right over my head. However, I found this episode to be pretty charming regardless. I always love the time travel plots. They’re endlessly entertaining. In case you need a recap, in this episode Sam and Dean find themselves hunting the god Chronos. All is going well until Dean gets pulled back into the past with Chronos. Sam and Dean spend the episode hunting the god from different centuries until Sam manages to bring Dean back to the present, killing Chronos in the process. I just hope the scuffle didn’t mess up Dean’s suit. I was also glad to see Jody Mills back in the show. I rea...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 11: Adventures in Babysitting

So, Bobby really is dead, huh? I’m not going to lie, I find that to be really depressing. Lately, Sam and Dean are losing literally everybody. At this rate, we’re not going to have any supporting characters left, and losing a father figure is doubly depressing. Although, I do think this episode was kind of an homage to Bobby, as the entire thing revolves around Sam and Dean saving a father so that he can be with his daughter. In case you need a recap, in this episode a hunter named Lee Chambers is hunting a pair of Vetalas when they capture him. The hunter’s daughter calls Bobby for help, and Sam responds. However, when Sam goes missing too, Dean is forced to go after him, and Dean and the daughter eventually save the day. In the meantime, Dean and Frank travel to Wisconsin to spy on the Leviathans in hopes of getting revenge for Bobby’s death. I’m quite interested to see how THAT turns out. All and all, I did like this episode, but it didn’t stand out to me as one of my favorites. The...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 10: Death's Door

SAD. That’s the only thing I have to say about this episode. SAD. First of all, I NEED to know if Bobby is dead or not. That last scene was very ambiguous; Bobby could have pulled through, but then again he might have decided to go with the reaper. On the other hand, it seemed clear that the lights were going out on Bobby, and I refuse to believe that he would allow himself to become a ghost, so the most likely outcome is that Bobby is dead. DEAD. Guys, I cannot express how much that breaks my heart, especially after everything we saw in this episode. Like, I don’t know how Supernatural can go forward as a show without Bobby. It is UNTHINKABLE. By the way, I think I’ve already spoiled everything, but—in case you need a recap—this episode takes place inside Bobby’s brain as he fights to stay alive. Bobby travels through his own memories, trying to escape from the reaper and get back to the boys. Meanwhile, the Winchesters are in the hospital, waiting to see if Bobby survives. Dean does ...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 9: How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters

Well, this episode was GROSS. I feel like I say that a lot, but, seriously, ICK. Someone needs to give me a trigger warning the next time Supernatural is going to introduce a cannibal zombie with a cat’s HEAD in his stomach. That stuff is going to haunt my nightmares for weeks! Speaking of which, in case you need a recap, this episode follows Sam, Dean, and Bobby as they travel to New Jersey to investigate a series of horrifically gross murders. They discover that the killing spree was caused by the turducken (turkey, duck, and chicken) sandwiches being served at a local restaurant. Usually, the sandwiches just cause the citizens to become complacent and uninterested in what’s going on around them; however, sometimes they have the side effect of creating cannibal zombie monsters. Who would have thunk it? The boys learn that the leviathans are behind the monster burgers and travel to their headquarters to investigate. Unfortunately, Bobby is shot as they try to escape. I think this epis...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 8: Season Seven, Time for a Wedding!

Oh my goodness, THIS EPISODE! I think I said that episode six was my favorite episode of this season; well, I’m renouncing that today. THIS was my favorite episode of the season. In fact, it might be one of my favorite episodes of the whole series. It was just so FUNNY. In case you need a recap, in this episode Becky (of the Supernatural fan community) makes a deal with a demon to get a potion that will make Sam fall deeply in love with her. Sam and Becky end up getting married and hilarity (and waffle irons) ensues. I should be angry with Becky for drugging and kidnapping Sam, but I just can’t find it in my heart to be mad at her, probably because she’s just too funny and wildly insane for words. I mean, drawing a devil’s trap with blueberry vodka? Come on, that’s adorable. Also, I have to admit that I wanted Becky to get the chance to show off Sam at her high school reunion. Call it a craving for justice or whatever, but I’m always in favor of watching smug people get their comeuppa...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 7: The Mentalists

Well, this episode tickled me all the way down to my socks. A town full of psychics? How adorable! I actually loved the concept of this episode; it was a lot of fun to watch the boys run around psychic town and get positive affirmations (by the way, “you're a virile manifestation of the divine” was the best line of the episode). This episode reminded me of some of the “monster of the week” episodes from earlier seasons, which is a good thing. I always enjoyed the “whodunit” aspect of those episodes. This episode had a particularly good mystery. In case you missed it, this episode revolved around a string of murders of local psychics. Sam and Dean discover that the psychics are being killed by a ghost and narrow down their suspects to two sisters who lived in the town hundreds of years ago. They decide that one sister is causing the murders and burn her bones. Unfortunately, they picked the wrong sister. I gotta say that the ghosts in this episode were DEEPLY creepy. I mean, in gene...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 6: Slash Fiction

I take back what I said in my last episode review. Now THIS is my favorite episode so far this season. I don’t know what it is, but something about a monster turning into someone else and committing crimes with their face is very intriguing to me (and it happens to happen a LOT in this show. Talk about identity theft!). I’m also endlessly interested in Dean and Sam’s run ins with the law, so I guess you could say that this was the perfect episode for me. Plus, there were muffins! What’s not to like? In case you need a recap, in this episode the Winchesters discover that two leviathans have stolen their faces and are going on a shooting spree in their names. While Sam and Dean track them down, Bobby stays with the leviathan that they captured in the last episode and tries to figure out how to kill it. He eventually succeeds (sort of) with the help of Sheriff Jody Mills. (Side note on Jodi and Bobby: If they don’t become a couple sometime soon, I’m going to scream. We need some sort of l...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 5: Shut Up, Dr. Phil

Now, THIS was an amusing episode. In fact, I think it was my favorite episode thus far in this season. In case you need a reminder, in this episode Sam and Dean arrive in a town in Indiana to investigate some mysterious deaths. They quickly discover that witches are involved and make plans to kill them. However, when the Winchesters arrive at the home of the two witches (who turn out to be married), they learn that the deaths are all part of a marital feud and basically act as marriage counselors instead. At the end of the episode, the male witch manages to save Sam and Dean from a leviathan, which he zaps with his witchy powers. NOW. I should make it clear that I don’t support gruesome murder as a way of resolving your familial problems, but, in this case, it did turn out pretty well. Plus, watching Sam and Dean try to offer relationship advice while the witches slammed them up against the wall with magic was pretty hilarious. The bees were a nice touch. I have to say that I originall...

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 4: Defending Your Life

I think the best word to describe this episode is interesting. In case you need a recap, in this episode the Winchesters run into the Egyptian god Osiris who is punishing people who feel guilty about mistakes they have made. Osiris zeroes in on Dean, who of course feels guilty about everything (!), and puts him on trial for his role in Jo and Amy’s deaths. Sam defends him, and Dean manages to escape punishment. Like I said, I thought this was an interesting episode, but it didn’t really strike a chord with me. It kind of felt like a filler episode, to be honest. We’ve seen Sam and Dean confronted with ghosts from their past before, so, to me, this episode didn’t bring anything new to the table. However, I did enjoy seeing Jo again, even as a ghost. I was frustrated that Dean didn’t tell Sam that he killed Amy. Like I said in my last review, I was angry that Dean killed her to begin with, but I don’t want the show to drag this plot out. I wish Dean would just tell Sam what happened so ...
