Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 7: Bad Boys

If there is ever a Supernatural spinoff show, I want it to be about Sam and Dean as children. Heartbreaking as it is, I’m endlessly fascinated by the story of how the Winchesters grew up. It sheds so much light on how they behave as adults, and the writers manage to infuse their childhood stories with so much genuine emotion. (Plus, I live for the 80s and 90s vibes). Seriously, I love Supernatural flashback episodes. I think this one reiterated something we all already knew: John Winchester was a terrible father. The more I learn about his parenting, the more surprised I am that Sam and Dean aren’t more emotionally scarred. I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir here, but who leaves their sixteen-year-old to rot in jail because he tried to steal food for his hungry brother? That is beyond harsh if you ask me. It’s actually really cold and unfeeling. And, the fact that John only came back to get Dean when he needed him is even worse. Does John not realize that anything could have happene

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 6: Heaven Can't Wait

I’ve gone through ups and downs with Castiel throughout this series, but this episode reaffirmed why I always go back to loving him. Seriously, Castiel was ADORABLE in this episode. I love him as a convenience store employee! Weirdly, it’s the perfect career for him. He takes taquitos and lottery tickets so seriously! It’s fantastic. I also like how he wears his blue vest everywhere, even on (supposed) dates! Like I said, adorable. “When I fell to earth, I didn't just lose my powers. I had nothing. Now, I'm a sales associate!” Has got to be the defining quote of this episode. One day, I would like to be as proud of something as Cas is to be a sales associate. I was actually pretty annoyed with Dean for making fun of him. Like, why can’t Castiel have a normal life? Why can’t he have a normal job? Sure, he’s an ex-angel with the hoardes of Heaven on his tail, but he deserves time to stop and smell the roses! (If you can call the smell of the gas station bathroom roses). Realistic

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 5: Dog Dean Afternoon

Okay. As a cat lover, I found this episode pretty hard to watch. Did that guy really need to eat the cat? Surely, the writers could have spared us that. I’m okay with all the blood, guts, and gore that Supernatural can throw at me, but I draw a line at causing harm to animals, and that scene in the shelter was pretty gruesome. To be fair, I wasn’t happy with the outcome for any animal in this episode. I guess we just have to hope that someone bothered to let those mice go free and that all the dogs that attacked the monster guy found good homes afterwards. I was a little miffed at Dean for letting all the dogs out. No matter how much they complain, those dogs were definitely better off in the shelter than on the streets. Especially the blind one! I guess I should be grateful that no one killed a dog in this episode. I’m almost 100% sure that a dog has never survived an episode of Supernatural (except for the one that Sam ran over, but that was a close call). That being said, I really

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 4: Slumber Party

Oh my goodness, this was such a FUN episode. I feel like every time Charlie appears, an amazing episode ensues. I know that she’s off to Oz now, but hopefully she comes back to planet Earth sometimes to catch up with the Winchesters. It was a bit weird to see the Wicked Witch of the West on Supernatural , but I have to admit that it worked well in this episode. Those flying monkeys were certainly one of the most terrifying monsters I’ve seen on Supernatural . In general, I thought that incorporating the mythology of the Wizard of Oz into the show was really clever. The whole episode was like a little movie! I particularly liked the character of Dorothy. She’s clearly a great hunter, and she’s lived a really interesting life. I hope we see her on the show again. Aside from the Wizard of Oz element, I thought this was a great episode for character building and development. I really enjoyed seeing Sam and Dean interact with Charlie in a relaxed way. (By the way, it was too funny that they

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 3: I’m No Angel

Remember how I said in the last review that I wasn’t sure about Ezekiel? Well, now I’m sure about Ezekiel, and I’m sure I don’t like him. Anyone who says that Castiel needs to go is majorly suspicious to me. It’s possible that Ezekiel isn’t trying to heal Sam, and he doesn’t want Castiel to know about it. Ezekiel might even be one of the big bads of this season. But, whatever the situation is, I’m not trusting Ezekiel anymore. However, in my opinion, the best part of the episode was Castiel learning to be human. Seriously, I could watch an entire season just about Castiel and his human activities. I’m glad he’s finally appreciating what Sam and Dean go through, but I’m thinking that Castiel is going to enjoy being a human eventually. We know that he definitely enjoys sex! (Even if it was with a reaper). His quotes in this episode were too funny! I particularly enjoyed “Do you ever tire of urinating? I'll never get used to it” and “I am really enjoying this place. Plentiful food. Go

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 2: Devil May Care

I really enjoyed the premiere of season nine, so I felt a little let down by this episode. It’s not that it was bad; it just wasn’t all that exciting to me. I suppose the season needs some episodes that just function to set up the plot, but five minutes after the episode ended I had already forgotten what happened, so that tells me it wasn’t all that interesting. That being said, I did enjoy Abaddon complaining about Crowley being the King of Hell when he’s really only a sales person. If there’s one thing you can always count on, it’s the fact that everyone is capable of pettiness, even Knights of Hell. What I’m gathering from this episode is that Abaddon is probably going to be one of the big bads of this season. I’m guessing that her plan is to take over Hell, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. Abaddon certainly has less imagination than Crowley, so she might be a less dangerous opponent for the Winchesters in the long run. On the other hand, she’s much harder to kill. I was kin

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 1: I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here

If all the episodes in season nine are as good as the first one, this is going to be a FANTASTIC season. First of all, I love any episode that includes the character of Death. He’s so great! So enigmatic. So captivating. Although, of course, I’m glad that Sam decided to live. Of course, there was never really any doubt that he was going to live because there are like six more seasons of this show, but not dying is always a good move. On the other hand, I thoroughly expect an absolute disaster when Sam learns that Dean saved his life through angelic possession. We actually had this exact same situation a few seasons ago when Dean decided not to tell Sam that he had lost his soul, and how did that turn out? Dean just refuses to learn that he should be honest with Sam. It’s SO frustrating. On the other side of the episode, I’m in love with the idea of all the angels falling to Earth and having to deal with Earth problems. I’m sure there will be all sorts of angel related dramas in this s

Review: Supernatural Season 8, Episode 23: Sacrifice

Now that is how you finish a season! I think that season eight was consistently good. It was kind of slow and steady, but this ending really packed a punch! And, I have to say that I haven’t enjoyed Supernatural so much since season five ended. Anyway! Let’s get into the episode. So much happened in this finale that I’m going to find it difficult to talk about everything, but let’s start with the biggest revelations first. We absolutely need to talk about Metatron. I have to give him credit, he was a lot more diabolical than I expected. Which is to say that I didn’t expect him to be diabolical at all. So, to recap, Metatron tricked Cas into thinking he was going to shut the gates of Heaven when he was actually going to expel all of the angels from Heaven. He also killed Naomi, which was a major positive if you ask me. He also neglected to tell Sam and Dean that Sam would die if he completed the demon trials. That was probably the worst thing he did. But, if you ask me, everything else

Review: Supernatural Season 8, Episode 22: Clip Show

I’m not even going to lie, guys, that was TRAGIC. We haven’t seen Sarah in seven seasons, but her death still managed to punch me in the gut. Come on writers! You can’t tell us she’s married with a one-year-old child and then kill her! This isn’t Game of Thrones ! Besides, she was the first girl that Sam got involved with after Jessica, and she remembers him with his stupid, 2005 haircut. You have to keep her around! I have to admit though that Crowley is taking the right tactic if he wants to get something from the Winchesters. There’s nothing more important to them than saving people. Of course, they’re not going to give him what he wants, but they’re not going to let him go around killing people either. So, I look forward to seeing how the Winchesters are going to resolve THAT situation. But, aside from all that DRAMA, I have to say that this episode was thoroughly enjoyable. The writers are really getting some good twists into the end of season eight, and I’m loving every minute of

Review: Supernatural Season 8, Episode 21: The Great Escapist

I don’t know how you’re feeling, but I’m pretty sure Crowly was born to direct. If being King of Hell doesn’t work out, Netflix should sign him; he could direct the sequel to Tiger King or something like that. Overall, I thought this was a really fun, really enjoyable episode. I love that Cas is back. (Although, I’m still disappointed in his choices in this season.) His trick with all the Biggerson's was very clever. Although, I would have been getting frostys at Wendy’s if I was him. Putting the angel tablet inside of him was also very clever, but not Clever enough for Crowley, as it turns out! I am getting tired of Naomi turning up and causing problems. I hope we can get rid of her somewhat soon! She has no right to keep appearing and reprogramming angel minds, as Ion pointed out. However, the conflict between her and Crowley is certainly adding tension to the show (as if we needed more of that!). However, I thought the best moment of the episode was meeting Metatron. Honestly,

Review: Supernatural Season 8, Episode 20: Pac-Man Fever

It’s been a long time since I liked an episode of Supernatural as much as I liked this episode. It was well and truly fantastic, and I think that that’s all thanks to Charlie. Seriously though, she’s quickly becoming my favorite recurring character on the show. I might even like her more than Castiel (gasp!). Could we just have Charlie in every episode? I mean, at this point she’s basically the demon-fighting younger sister that the Winchesters never had. I also liked that we finally got some backstory on Charlie in this episode. The story about her parents is absolutely heartbreaking, although it does explain her rootless lifestyle. I suppose we wouldn’t have the Charlie we have now if she had had a normal childhood, but I still teared up when I heard her reading the Hobbit to her mom at the end of the episode. Putting my obsession with Charlie Bradbury aside, I thought that the actual plot and monster of this episode were pretty good as well. I was really amused by Charlie and Dean

Review: Supernatural Season 8, Episode 19: Taxi Driver

Oh my goodness, this was an EMOTIONAL episode. I can’t believe Benny is GONE! Realizing that he wasn’t going to come back from purgatory was just unbelievably sad. I loved Benny as a character, and I thought he was a really good, interesting addition to the show. I’m disappointed that he won’t be reappearing because I thought the writers could have done a lot more with him, but I understand why Benny didn’t want to hang around anymore. I imagine his life was incredibly lonely and purposeless without Dean or other companions. I also want to give a shoutout to Benny for being generous enough to help Sam escape Purgatory. Considering the way Sam behaved, I wouldn’t have been surprised if Benny refused to help him. But, like I said, Benny is a GOOD guy. (Take note Sam!) Anyway, other stuff happened in this episode, so I should probably move on. In this episode, we learn about the second challenge: Sam must free an innocent soul from Hell and return it to Heaven. So, he has to sneak into He

Review: Supernatural Season 8, Episode 18: Freaks and Geeks

Oh my goodness, this episode made me so ANGRY! Don’t get me wrong, it was a really good episode, and I enjoyed it a lot, but I just can’t STAND teenagers with attitudes. I swear, listening to a teen telling an adult that they have it all figured out is the most provoking thing. I don’t think I was ever that bad when I was young, and I certainly wasn’t as annoying as the kids in this episode. Like, the total confidence that the teen hunters have that they’re right just drives me up the wall. I guess they’re good kids or whatever, but honestly I couldn’t stand any of them. That’s not to say that the adults in this episode were golden because Victor ENRAGED me. I mean, what on EARTH was that guy thinking? Working with a vampire? Killing innocent families? I mean, that guy was obviously deranged. There’s no way any sane hunter would behave like that. I think it’s probably good that he’s dead; if he had lived he might have caused more problems. On another note, I did enjoy the fact that we
