Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 18: Point of No Return

Okay, let’s all take a moment to celebrate! Ding, dong the witch is dead! FINALLY! I’ve been waiting for someone to ice Zachariah for like ages at this point! He’s such an unbelievable jerk that I’m shocked that the angels didn’t get annoyed with him several millennia ago. That scene where Dean just STABBED him was so SATISFYING. I loved it. But, this was kind of a big episode for shocking reveals because, guess what? ADAM! Adam is back! I honestly don’t know how I feel about this. I mean, I was certainly surprised! When Cas pulled him out of the ground, I gasped so loudly it startled my cat! On one hand, I’m glad that Adam is back. I was *intrigued* by the idea that Sam and Dean had another brother, and I was sad that we never really got to see him alive, so I’m glad they brought him back. But, at the same time, it’s kind of depressing that Adam is now wrapped up in this mess too. I mean, it may be harsh to say, but there’s some argument that he was better off dead. At least he was ha

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 17: 99 Problems

I don’t know if there were 99 problems in this episode, but there were certainly enough problems to be getting on with! Religious extremists? Yes. Demons? Yes. The literal Whore of Babylon? Yes. A drunk angel? Yes (and it was hilarious!). So, in this episode, Sam and Dean basically discover a town full of people who have all become impromptu hunters. It turns out that they’re being led by a woman named Leah who claims to have visions from angels. Leah tells the townspeople when the demons will attack and basically instructs them on how to survive the final judgement and be admitted into paradise. The only problem is...she’s not actually a prophet. It turns out that Leah is the Whore of Babylon and is intentionally getting the townspeople to commit sins, such as killing their neighbors for minor indiscretions. However, fortunately, Cas knows how to deal with her, and Dean is able to kill her at the end of the episode. The end of the episode also reveals that Dean is thinking about sayin

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 16: Dark Side of the Moon

Just when you thought Dean couldn’t experience any more psychological trauma, they had to go and drop this episode on us. Watching the “ghost” of Mary Winchester tell Dean that she never loved him and talk about how she could smell herself burning to death was almost more than I could bear. It was certainly more than Dean could bear. I think we all know that it was just the angels trying to get into his head, but it was absolutely BRUTAL. Not to mention that Dean had to watch Sam reliving all his great memories of running away from his family. That might have hurt him even more than what his mother said. The whole thing was a “who can traumatize Dean more” contest. I swear to you, the word “poor Dean!” should be the tagline of this show. Psychological pain aside, I did really enjoy this episode. It was actually really cute to see Sam and Dean’s happiest memories, particularly Dean as a little boy having pie with his mom (I wonder if that’s why he loves pie so much?). Although, that sce

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 15: Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

So, remember how I said the last episode was disturbing? I take it back. THIS episode makes the last one look like an episode of Rugrats ! If you need a quick recap, this episode is basically about the zombie apocalypse. Or, shall we say the zom-pocalypse. Sam and Dean investigate a town (that happens to be near Bobby’s house) that is experiencing an upsurge in zombies. Normally, you would think that people would be upset if they encountered a corpse-person, but the townspeople are actually happy that the zombies are rising because they get to see their beloved family members again. It turns out that Bobby’s wife is one of the zombies, and she’s at home in the kitchen just casually baking pie! Anyway, for a while the zombies behave like normal people and then they start, well, behaving like zombies. Cue the brain eating! Sam and Dean then team up with the townspeople to kill (again) all the people who have risen from the dead. So, I have two emotions about this episode: disgust and sad

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 14: My Bloody Valentine

You know what I don’t want to see? People eating each other to death. That was a major ICK! I think that was the most disturbing thing on this show since we had to watch that girl eat the rat in “Family Remains.” Speaking of disturbing, I am not a fan of Famine in this episode. They couldn’t have made him creepier if he had snakes coming out of his ears! (Although that might actually be funny and not scary). Like, no offense to Death, but that shriveled up old guy who eats souls with his HIDEOUS teeth is a lot more frightening! Although, I have to say that it was funny to watch Cas eat several hundred hamburgers. I guess if you’re an angel, you just can’t gain weight, right? Or have blocked arteries? I’m not actually sure how that works because Cas’s vessel, Jimmy is just a regular human. So, you would imagine that Jimmy continues to have normal biological processes even though Cas is inside him, right? Or, maybe, Cas can use his angel powers to just keep the body in a state of permane

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 13: The Song Remains the Same

Oh my goodness, TEARS! Just like, tears for DAYS! This episode just crushed my heart and soul into tiny little pieces! Especially that last line: “angels are watching over you.” That was just CRUEL. I mean, what a LINE! Speaking of angels, I’m actually really upset that Anna went over to the dark side. I thought she understood what’s up! Now, we’ve lost our last female character! Great! Plus, after Jo, she was the one I shipped with Dean the most. Like, seriously, this episode was just really SAD. First of all, if you didn’t tear up when Mary realized that she was going to die and her sons would be hunters, you’re heartless. Like, imagine how Dean and Sam must have felt when they heard that? It just breaks your heart! I mean, there were a lot of emotional moments. When Sam was talking to his dad about their future experiences (confusing, I know), I was almost in tears. Why is there so much psychological pain in the Winchester family?! While all the conversations and interpersonal rel

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 12: Swap Meat

Oh my goodness, this was too funny for life! I DIED laughing. DIED! That kid pretending to be Sam was just too cute and too cringy all at the same time. It was wonderfully funny. My only complaint about the episode is that I feel like Dean should have noticed that Sam wasn’t Sam WAY earlier. I mean, his character and his behavior was 100% different. How on Earth did Dean not notice that? It was SO , incredibly frustrating. I just kept yelling at the screen, BEGGING Dean to catch on. I feel like he would have figured it out in reality, but, of course, this is TV. I was also confused as to how those CHILDREN kept getting their hands on tranquilizers. Like, aside from the witchcraft, they all seem pretty vanilla to me. I find it totally implausible that they were able to figure out how to tranquilize people; but, again, this is TV. SIGH. Anyway, I did like that the kids were dumb. I think all of us who are on the other side of our teenage years can look back and realize that we behaved s

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 11: Sam, Interrupted

Man, was this episode ever good! It was funny, disturbing, and frightening, all at the same time! What more can you ask from Supernatural ? First of all, I love that all Sam and Dean have to do to get committed is tell the truth about their lives. That scene where Sam was like “well, I’ve been a little bit depressed ever since I started the apocalypse” and Dean was like “oh, don’t beat yourself up over that” was priceless. Plus, I love that the doctor thinks that Sam and Dean have a codependent relationship. Oh doc, you have no idea. Seriously though, this episode is hilarious! Who doesn’t love Dean carefully stepping over the cracks in the floor in that goofy way? Or Sam all drugged up on antipsychotic meds? That might actually be more funny than drunk Sam. In case you need a recap, in this episode Sam and Dean help out a former hunter by investigating some mysterious deaths in a psychiatric hospital. In order to get the insider scoop, they purposefully get themselves committed (whic

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 10: Abandon All Hope…

JO AND ELLEN! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I honestly can’t believe they’re both dead. Just like that! It seems like we just got them back on the show, and already they’re gone. Gone forever! Not to mention that death scene was one of the saddest things I’ve seen on TV. Watching Jo slowly bleed out was excruciating, and the fact that Ellen had to die with her daughter was even worse. Honestly, when Dean kissed Jo’s forehead, I dissolved into a pile of tears. It was such a painful thing to watch! Even more so because it turned out that Jo and Ellen’s deaths were essentially meaningless. That’s a hard pill to swallow. And, Bobby burning that photo at the end of the episode was just crushing! Watching Jo’s face dissolve in the flames was like watching her die all over again! All I can say is that they better introduce some more recurring female characters to the show. We’re really going to feel a gap now that Ruby, Bela, Jo, and Ellen are all gone. This episode was also really demoralizing in terms

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 9: The Real Ghostbusters

That’s it. Put down your pencils. I’ve discovered the best episode of Supernatural ever, and it’s this one. Period. End of story. Like, I cannot even begin to express to you how good this episode is. The fans! The costumes! The Q&A! The on-theme mixed drinks! It’s all too perfect for words. First of all, I think we all have to acknowledge how genius it is to have a Supernatural convention in an episode of Supernatural . It’s just so META—in a perfect, wonderfully amusing sort of way. But, I think the LARP-ing is the best. It’s so WEIRD to see a bunch of randos dressed as Sam and Dean, pretending to be FBI agents. Only the real Sam and Dean get to pretend to be FBI! Speaking of investigations, I thought the mystery in this episode was really good. Creepy, but good. I thought the murderous gang of little boys was a nice touch; man does Supernatural ever love spooky kid ghosts! My favorite moment was when Sam and Dean dug up Leticia’s bones, and the LARP-ers were like,

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 8: Changing Channels

Oh my goodness! I LOVED THIS EPISODE!! It was SO incredibly funny. I love the sunglasses at night. I love that there is a TV show called Dr. Sexy, M.D. I love that Sam performs operations with dental floss. I love the sitcom laugh track. Sam turning into the Impala was inspired. And the title sequence. Don’t even get me started on the title sequence! It was a true work of art. It was all GOLD. GOLD, I tell you! I don’t know if this is my favorite episode of Supernatural, but I certainly think it’s the funniest. In case you need a recap, this episode begins with Sam and Dean investigating the death of a man who was supposedly killed by the Incredible Hulk (fishy, huh?). They quickly discover that they’re dealing with the Trickster once again, but he traps them in TV world and refuses to let them out until they play their roles (i.e. say yes to Lucifer and Michael). However, thanks to a little help from Cas, the Winchesters discover that the Trickster is actually an angel who left Heave

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 7: The Curious Case of Dean Winchester

I LOVE OLD DEAN! Oh my goodness, this episode was so funny! I mean, it was sort of sad too. And morbid. In the way that episodes of Supernatural often are. But, mostly, I love old Dean, with his aches and pains and whining. It was comedic GOLD! In case you need a recap, in this episode, Sam and Dean investigate the death of a young man who suddenly died of old age. They discover that there is a powerful witch in town who swindles people out of years of their lives through poker games. Bobby, who is depressed about his paralysis, decides to gamble with the witch and loses twenty five years of life. Subsequently, Dean decides to win his years back and manages to lose twenty five of his own in the process. Hilarity ensues as “old Dean” does his best to cope with the aches and pains of old age while trying to continue living his playboy lifestyle. However, the Winchesters catch a lucky break when the witch’s girlfriend decides to turn on him, giving them a spell to take away all his years

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 6: I Believe the Children Are Our Future

Is it just me, or did this episode have the exact same plot as Good Omens ? Well, I don’t think there were any whoopee cushions in Good Omens , but— other than that— it’s basically the same. Anyway, we now have an antichrist, so I guess that’s the final ingredient for the apocalypse? Can’t have an apocalypse without an antichrist! In case you need a recap, basically, in this episode we meet a little boy named Jesse, who turns out to be the antichrist, a half human, half demon creature. He is extremely powerful, so much so that his beliefs literally change the world around him, causing several people to die in weird ways. Sam and Dean investigate his past and discover that he was adopted. His birth mother was possessed by a demon, who somehow impregnated her (?) I’m still not sure how that happened. Meanwhile, Cas learns what they discovered and tries to kill Jessie. (I like Cas and all, but he keeps disappointing me. C’mon Cas, you’re not supposed to kill kids! You’re on TV!!) However,
