Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 16: Blade Runners

Simply put, this episode was just AMAZING. It was so fun and so weird, in the best possible way. First of all, magical bunker full of crazy, rare, supernatural stuff? How is that not going to be interesting? This episode had me hooked from the moment Sam and Dean disappeared in a flash of magical light. For all of his villainy, Cuthbert Sinclair was actually quite an interesting character. Evil geniuses are always interesting characters. Plus, as I said, I liked his bunker. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer Sam and Dean’s bunker, but his bunker had a certain panache. Plus, I like his taste in paintings (that’s my art history nerd side coming out). Be that as it may, the best part of the episode was CROWLEY! In fact, now that Kevin is dead and Charlie hasn’t been on the show in a while, Crowley might be one of my favorite characters on the show. But, he was definitely one of my favorite characters in this episode. He was so funny and weird and random! I mean, who didn’t laugh when Crowley w

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 15: #thinman

Oh my goodness, this episode! This. This is the Supernatural that I signed up for, the Supernatural that keeps me glued to my screen and pulls me back in after bad or mediocre episodes. In case you can’t tell, I really liked this episode. It was classic Supernatural , a callback to the first five seasons when the show was on fire! We had an emotional gut punch mixed with self-referential humor and wonderful weirdness. That’s what I want! Okay. Let’s get to talking about the actual episode. First of all, who wasn’t excited to see the Ghostfacers again? I shrieked with excitement when their van appeared on my screen. It turned out that they were dealing with some pretty serious emotional problems, but, hey, I’m still here for their ridiculous and over-the-top ghost hunting techniques. I was especially impressed by Ed’s over the top narration of supernatural crime scenes. I also thought the monster of this episode was really good (you know, in a terrifying way, of course). This episode r

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 14: Captives

Aw. This episode was sad! In fact, tragic is probably the best word to describe it. Yes, Kevin is dead, but he isn’t done with the Winchesters yet. In this episode, we learn that Kevin has been hanging around in the bunker as a ghost. He is unable to move on because Heaven is “shut down” in some fashion. Souls are instead trapped in limbo. This is an interesting aspect of the afterlife that I hope we explore further in future episodes (I’m especially interested in how the dead can pass messages to eachother; that’s fascinating). However, the more important thing is that Kevin has some unfinished business: his mother. I can’t remember the last time we saw Mrs. Tran on this show. However, she is an important character, and the show probably should have addressed her fate a long time ago. It turns out that Crowley has been keeping her prisoner all this time, in a storage unit of all places! You would think that the King of Hell could devise a better place to store his prisoners. Also, he’

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 13: The Purge

Wait a minute, you mean to tell me that there are Peruvian fat-sucking monsters running around in the world, and I didn’t know about it until now? Seriously, I know that Sam and Dean viewed what was happening at Canyon Valley as monstrous, but—aside from Alonzo’s extracurricular activities—I don’t see much of a problem with it. The world is full of humans trying to lose weight; if their friendly, neighborhood Pishtaco can help with that, so much the better. I mean, it seems like a very logical arrangement to me. True, the roofies in the pudding aren’t very ethical, but revealing the world of monsters and magic to average Americans probably isn’t a good idea either. If you ask me, I think Sam and Dean did the right thing: kill Alonzo and leave well enough alone with Maritza. While the “mystery” of the episode was pretty entertaining, I am getting prett-y fed up with Sam’s instance that the Winchesters don’t act like brothers. I get that Sam has had trauma in his life, and I’m sympatheti

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 12: Sharp Teeth

FINALLY! I’ve been wondering what happened to Garth for eons. I’m glad they finally decided to tell us! Viewers have been in suspense for way too long. I imagined a whole lot of things happening to Garth, but becoming a werewolf was not one of them! Supernatural is still able to surprise me after all these seasons. I’m not going to lie, I am a bit disappointed that Garth is now a werewolf and no longer a hunter. I’ll miss seeing him on hunts. However, I did enjoy learning more about werewolves. In most fictional worlds, werewolves are complicated characters with complex social and political dynamics. So, it was a little surprising that Supernatural decided to portray their werewolves as unthinking, unreasoning monsters. I’m glad to see that Supernatural has now decided to dive into a more complex view of werewolves. (Can you tell that I thought deeply about this?) Actually, I wouldn’t mind having a whole season of Supernatural covering the ins and outs of werewolf life, but we’ll sa

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 11: First Born

I have to say it: Cain might be my new favorite character on this show. I mean, who doesn’t love an immortal beekeeper with a penchant for violence? Seriously though, I think Cain is going to make a fascinating character on this show. His story is already very intriguing. The fact that he is the killer of the Knights of Hell is a really interesting detail, and his story with Colette is just heartbreaking. If Supernatural made a spin-off show about Cain’s life, I would be all over it. Speaking of great new characters, let’s all take a moment of silence for Tara. We met her for about thirty seconds, but she really stood out, and I was hoping we would see more of her in future episodes. Alas, that was not to be. Let’s hope someone gave her a hunter’s funeral. The big story of this episode, however, was Sam’s partnership with Castiel and Dean’s partnership with Crowley. There’s some interesting symmetry going on there, that’s for sure. I’m sure I’m not the only fan to say this, but I am a

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 10: Road Trip

I have to be honest, this wasn’t a super memorable episode for me. Compared to the other episodes in this season, I feel like “Road Trip” was mostly filler. It connected the dots on some of the plot points playing out across this season—which was important—but it didn’t have a strong plot on its own, which made it kind of blend in with the other episodes in this season. That being said, there were some good and important moments in this episode. First of all, Gadreel is no longer in Sam. Obviously, that should have happened a long time ago (especially since Castiel could heal him in a few seconds). However, it was fun to watch Gadreel and Crowley fight it out inside Sam’s mind. I’m a little disappointed that Sam decided to go his separate way after Gadreel was expelled, but I obviously get it. Per usual, the Winchesters have a huge and emotional betrayal to get over. (Honestly, there’s always so much DRAMA with the Winchesters! I feel like we’ve been repeating the same emotional patter

Review: The Last Kingdom Season 4 Episode 10

Now THAT is how end a SEASON! I mean, was that a great finale or was that a great finale? I don't know about you but I felt that we got the perfect mix of tying up loose ends and setting the scene for future seasons in this episode. The siege of Winchester is over and Uhtred's family and friends are dispersing to their individual duties and homes. Looking forward to next season, we can anticipate that Uhtred will be raising Æthelstan , Brida will be raising her own murderous child, and there will be no end of political infighting in the courts of Wessex. Fun, no? But, that's for the future. For now, let's dive into talking about this episode. First of all, we HAVE to talk about Stiorra's romance with Sigtryggr. I mean, if you can call it a romance. There were very few romantic scenes between them, which is a little disappointing from my point of view. I'm not doubting that they're into each other, but I think the audience needed one or two more scenes to re

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 9: Holy Terror

Wait, did they really kill, Kevin? I mean, is he actually, completely, 100% dead? Because, if so, that’s pretty messed up. Kevin has been with us as a character for so long! How could they kill him so quickly and so casually? It’s almost as bad as the way the writers killed Tara on True Blood (by the way, did you hear there’s going to be a True Blood reboot? I’m not in favor.). If that really was the end of Kevin, I’m going to be pretty upset. Someone better find a way to resurrect him! He was one of the best supporting characters on the show. Other than Kevin’s death, there was some pre-tty shocking stuff in this episode. For example, the fact that Ezekiel isn’t Ezekiel. Let’s take a minute to talk over that. Now, I’ve been skeptical of Ezekiel for quite a while, but it never occurred to me that he might be a completely different person (or angel, more accurately)! That just wasn’t on my bingo card. Anyway, I shouldn’t be surprised because we’ve known that angels are ridiculously dup

Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 8: Rock and a Hard Place

I have to say that I wasn’t a big fan of this episode. While I liked that it was a “monster of the week” episode (because we haven’t had one of those in a while), the actual plot of the episode wasn’t all that appealing to me. I actually got really excited when I thought it was going to be about dragons, so it was a bit of a let down when the monster turned out to be the Roman goddess Vesta. It just doesn’t have the same cache, you know? That being said, I did really enjoy seeing Jody Mills back on Supernatural . I feel like she’s a massively underused character. I wish she was a permanent part of team Winchester. She’s just such a super cool, tough lady who can seemingly handle any weird, supernatural stuff that gets thrown at her. Of course, the most entertaining part of this episode was Sam and Dean deciding to become born again virgins. Vestal virgins, if you will. As Dean said so eloquently, I don’t think you can un-ring that bell. Seriously though, it was hilarious watching Sam a
