Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 5: Fallen Idols

Dean wrestling Paris Hilton to the ground in a wax museum. Seriously, what could possibly be weirder? Not to mention Ghandi trying to bite off Sam’s ear. That’s something you don’t see everyday! Basically, this episode was just delightfully weird. If you need a recap, Sam and Dean investigate a series of strange murders in which fans are being murdered by their “celebrity” hero. A good old fashioned monster hunt! We haven’t seen one of these in a while! They discover that the deaths are linked to a wax museum, which is being haunted by a defunct god who used to feast upon the blood of its worshippers. (Although why this god decided to hang out in a wax museum is beyond me. Surely even monsters find those places creepy, right?) They eventually kill the god, and all is right with the world. However, the big takeaway from this episode is that Sam and Dean are working on their relationship. I think the conversation they had about how Dean needs to let Sam grow up was surprisingly mature an

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 4: The End

MAN! This episode was INTENSE. First of all, zombie-apocalypse (excuse me, demon virus apocalypse) = stressful. (Although, I have to say that I enjoyed the happy, up-beat music as the troops were slaughtering the croats. It was a nice touch). Also, this episode was just kind of sad. In case you need a recap, in this episode Zachariah sends Dean to the future (although it took me a minute to realize 2014 was the future in the context of this show) to see what will happen if he doesn’t accept Michael into his body. Dean learns that the world has been devoured by the Croatoan virus and that Sam has accepted Lucifer. The episode ends with future Dean trying to kill Lucifer in the shape of Sam. The idea that, in the future, Sam and Dean no longer speak to each other and end their days trying to kill each other is really very tragic. It’s obviously a very gloomy episode. However, since they showed this to us, I doubt it’s going to actually happen, which cheered me up a bit. Watching Dean arg

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 3: Free to Be You and Me

Forget everything I said about being disappointed in Cas. I forgive him everything. I LOVE Cas! I couldn’t stop laughing when Dean took him to the brothel. That was HI-LARIOUS! I could watch an entire season of Dean trying to teach Cas how to do normal human things. I’m sure it would be endlessly entertaining. Also, is it just me, or do they have a major bromance going? I doubt either of them have ever really had a friend before. It suits them. On the other hand, I felt TERRIBLE for Sam in this episode. Yes, he started the apocalypse. Yes, everything is his fault. But, it’s really tough to watch people who don’t even really know Sam angry with him. Sam is doing the best he can and trying to get his life back in order, he doesn’t need to be beat up and forced to drink demon blood. (He especially doesn’t need to be forced to drink demon blood; look what happened last time!) Also, whatever Sam did, he doesn’t deserve to be Lucifer’s vessel. I know I said that it was going to take me a lo

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 2: Good God, Y’All

Ohhhh well this was a trippy episode! There were no demons after all; they were just in their minds! There’s some profound point that can be made about that, but I can’t think of it right now. Anyway, I thought this was a fun episode, if you can call war and mass hallucinations fun. Compared to everything else that’s been happening in this show, it was like a trip to Chucky Cheese. Basically, in this episode Sam and Dean investigate a town that has been overrun by demons (supposedly). When they arrive, they find that several hunters (Jo, Ellen, and Rufus) are already on the case. However, Rufus and Jo have been possessed. Sam, Dean, and Ellen set out to find and free them, but, when they bump into Jo and Rufus, they think that they are possessed instead. Quite a head scratcher, right? Anyway, it turns out that War— one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse— has arrived in the town and is making everyone believe that everyone else is possessed, even though no one is actually possessed

Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 1: Sympathy for the Devil

Do I have sympathy for the devil? No, actually; I don’t think I do. It seems like the devil—Lucifer—has gotten everything he wanted in this situation. I do have sympathy for that guy Nick though. His wife and kid are dead, and now Lucifer is going to be literally inside him. He has no idea the kind of agony—physical and psychological—he’s about to endure. Anyway, we cover a lot of plot in this episode. First of all we learn that Sam and Dean were saved from Lucifer. I assumed that would happen, but it’s still good to see it confirmed. We also learn that Cas was destroyed by the other angels, although he has somehow been resurrected. (Which is good, because I have a feeling that we’re going to need Cast to stop the apocalypse). Most importantly, we learn that Dean is Michael’s Sword, meaning that he’s supposed to be Michael’s vessel so the angel can use Dean’s body to destroy Lucifer. Ew, am I right? I guess this is why the angels tried so hard to save Dean from hell. They couldn’t just

Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 22: Lucifer Rising

Oh my goodness, the DRAMA! THE DRAMA!!! That is what I call a season finale! First of all, I have to say that I hate everyone now. Particularly Ruby. GAH! If I didn’t hate her before, I would certainly hate her now, if for nothing more than her stupid line in this episode: “I’M AWESOME!” I mean, what was that? What a dumb line! The apocalypse is starting and you’re talking about how awesome you are? Get over yourself. Anyway, I’m glad she’s dead. I wish all the angels were dead too! I mean, I knew they were bad, but I genuinely didn’t expect them to betray Sam and Dean to that extent. It’s just so INFURIATING! I mean, talk about sadistic and manipulative. With angels like these, who needs demons. Not that the demons are much better. Like I said, I hate Ruby and Lilith for tricking Sam into starting the apocalypse. However, I also kind of hate Sam for letting them trick him. Sam had the best of intentions, yes, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that he decided he knew better than everyo

Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 21: When the Levee Breaks

Man was this episode ever hard to watch.  I mean, it was BRUTAL . Watching this episode was just emotionally exhausting! I felt bad for everyone in this episode but especially for Dean. How much more is Dean going to have to go through??? Like, it isn’t bad enough that he had to raise Sam and go to hell for him? Now he has to watch his brother possibly turn into a demon or face the fact that Sam might die? For goodness sake, there’s only so much emotional abuse one person can take! Not to downplay the abuse Sam took in this episode. I mean, he brought it on himself for sure, but it was so, so hard to watch him hallucinating and thinking that he’s being tortured. And it must have been even more agonizing for him to face his own subconscious. I know that it was hard enough for me to just watch it. I will say though that Dean did the right thing. Detoxing was the best thing for Sam. As hard as it was for Dean to watch and Sam to live through, it probably would have worked in the end. Tha

Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 20: The Rapture

I felt SO BAD for Jimmy in this episode! SO BAD! With every episode that goes by, I like the angels less and less. I mean, sure, Jimmy volunteered to be possessed, but Cas didn’t give him the full story. Plus, I’m sorry but the angels did not protect his family! Those people are going to need counseling for life! And, like, it’s so tragic that Jimmy is never going to get to see his family again and vice versa. I mean, I’m not even sure if Jimmy is technically alive anymore! Either way, that little girl is going to grow up without a father, and I don’t think anyone has really thought about what that will mean for her! Maybe I’m getting too upset about this, but I am genuinely really annoyed by the way angels treat humans. There is no respect whatsoever. Anyway, now that I’ve ranted a bit, I should probably tell you what happened in the episode. In case you need a recap, in this episode Cas gets pulled out of his vessel and returned to heaven because, apparently, he’s being too friendly

Review: The Last Kingdom Season 4 Episode 4

Well, we're making progress. Cnut, whom I hate, is dead. Aethelred, whom I hate, is *almost* dead. Not too shabby, huh? Now, I just need someone to knock off Edward's father-in-law, and we'll all be peachy-keen. But, seriously, this was a really good episode. It almost felt like it could have been the season finale because soooooo much happened. Like, we had a major battle, the death of a major character, vengeance for Ragnar, and sundry political negotiations all in one episode. Those show writers do not slack off! I have to say that I really enjoyed this episode. It kept me on my toes the whole time, although I always assume that Uhtred will win every battle that he's involved in. Speaking of the battle, I'm glad that Brida had the chance to kill Cnut. Hopefully that gives her a little closure, but I have a feeling that she's going to be suffering for a while. Maybe Uhtred should have killed her. It might have been kinder, but, on the other hand, she&#

Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 19: Jump the Shark

Well, this episode was BRUTAL. It was seriously an emotional roller coaster for me. First, I was a bit afraid of whatever dragged the mom under the bed, then I was kind of sad that Dean and Sam had a brother but never knew about him, then I was happy that they were getting to know him, then I was HORRIFIED when Dean saw him in the coffin, and then I was just heartbroken on the Winchesters’ behalf. I mean, the end of that episode. THE END! I can’t even begin to describe the sensation I felt when I saw Adam dead in that coffin. I mean, what a TWIST! A horrible twist, but a twist nonetheless. I just feel so BAD for Sam and Dean. It’s emotionally difficult enough to learn that you had a brother you never heard about, but to realize that he’s actually been dead the whole time is next level horror. GAH! On another note, it was so hard—in a completely different way—to see Dean thinking that his father loved Adam more. I get that Sam and Dean had very different paths in life compared to Adam,

Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 18: The Monster at the End of This Book

THE WINCHESTER GOSPELS! I don’t know about you, but I think my New Testament is missing that part. Can you imagine how sensational Sunday school would have been if Sam and Dean were in the bible? Oh my goodness, I LOVED this episode! Like, it’s so META. It’s an episode of a TV show in which the characters find out that they’re characters in a series of popular books. I mean, how great is that? I died laughing the whole time, especially when I saw those book covers. Tell me, which one of those romance cover models was supposed to be Dean and which one was supposed to be Sam? Also, I love the horrifically bad writing. Even the Prophet Chuck admitted it: “I mean, horror is one thing, but to be forced to live bad writing... if I would have known it was real, I would have done another pass.” Not to mention Sam and Dean reading about how people are fans of them online. I love that they’re discovering fan fic. In fact, I wonder if anyone has written any fan fic about the Supernatural books wi

Review: The Last Kingdom Season 4 Episode 3

Image
Well, that episode was jam packed! I actually felt like I was watching it for hours and hours because so many BIG things kept happening. First of all, Uhtred escaped from Bebbanburg. I think we all knew that was going to happen. The rest of season four would have fallen pretty flat without him. More importantly (at least from an emotional perspective), however, Beocca is killed as Uhtred and his men escape. I gotta be honest, that was a hard pill to swallow. I kind of felt like sitting with Uhtred on that hill top and having a good cry about it. Beocca has been with us since episode one, and he really is one of the only truly good guys on the show. To see him die in such a brutal fashion is really hard to accept, although at least he got to return to Bebbanburg before he died. Also, as Finan says, he is at peace with Thyra. Now, THAT really brought a tear to my eye. Overall, I thought this was a very emotional episode. Obviously, the whole thing was shadowed by the tragedy of

Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 17: It's a Terrible Life

Oh my goodness, Dean driving a Prius! I burst out laughing! Not to mention, the juice cleanse and salads. And the suspenders! THE SUSPENDERS! And Sam! Sam doing IT!!! Oh my goodness, this was such a good episode! It was so hilarious! Like, these are the episodes of Supernatural that I just adore. It’s always interesting to see what Sam and Dean would be like if they weren’t Winchesters. Although, as we learned, they wouldn’t actually be that different because hunting is in their blood. Speaking of hunting, the best part of the whole episode was when Dean found the Ghostfacer’s instructional videos online. I was SO HAPPY to see the Ghostfacers again! I just died of joy. However, I did think that the premise of the episode—that the angel Zachariah wanted to show Sam and Dean that they were, in fact, destined to fight monsters—was silly. I mean, was it really necessary? It seems like a lot of unnecessary trouble. Also, the monster wasn’t particularly interesting. A workaholic ghost? Like,

Review: The Last Kingdom Season 4 Episode 2

Wow, was that ever melodramatic. I mean, I guess that's The Last Kingdom's specialty, right? I didn't expect Uhtred to be able to reclaim Bebbanburg easily, but even I am mildly shocked by the sheer level of disaster that he got himself into. I mean, if this was real life, all of Uhtred's men would be dead in about five seconds! This is a TV show, so I expect that most of them will pull off miraculous escapes, but it's still an utter DISASTER. I mean, I do feel bad for Uhtred in this situation because there was no way he could have known that his cousin was alive (and seems to be taking fashion advice from the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean , by the way). If it wasn't for Wihtgar, I think Uhtred would the lord of Bebbanburg right now, but, unfortunately, his cousin out maneuvered him. I'm also disappointed that Uhtred didn't get to kill his uncle. I think he deserved that after all his years of suffering. Although, I have to say that the uncle

Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 16: On the Head of a Pin

Man, angels really are terrible, aren’t they? Like, I know I’ve said they’re bloodthirsty and mean before, but this is next level! First of all, I want to say that I always knew Uriel was a bad guy. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! I’m glad Anna stabbed him! Plus, I think his evil plan is a bit short sighted. I’m always baffled by these people who want to bring about the apocalypse; even if you’re an angel, surely that’s not so good for you, right? Also, raising Lucifer??? How does anyone think that’s a bad idea. Like, does anyone genuinely think that Lucifer is going to be their friend? He’s deceptive! That’s kind of the point, right? Not to mention that killing other angels is patently counter productive if you want them to be the dominant species again. Anyway, like I said, I’m glad he’s dead. And now, hopefully, Cas will be more useful. He’s started to doubt, which can only be good for his character development. He’s far too vanilla at the moment. As much as I’m glad Cas is thinkin

Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 15: Death Takes a Holiday

Man, Pamela really can’t win, can she? First, Cas literally burns her eyes out, and now she gets stabbed by a demon? Yup, she was right to not want to get involved with any more Winchester stuff. I’m actually quite sad that she’s dead. I liked her a lot. In case you need a recap, in this episode Sam and Dean investigate a town where no one is dying. They discover that another seal is about to be broken, this one involving killing two reapers under a solstice moon. The Winchesters find the spirit of the last person who died, a little boy named Cole, and use him to connect with the reaper Tessa, who Dean met in season two. (By the way, they essentially have to DIE for this to happen, which seems like a horrible idea, but, you know, the Winchesters aren’t big on personal safety). Anyway, they discover that the demon Alastair is behind the plot, and Cas and the other angels kidnap him, preventing the seal from being broken. The only problem is that Pamela gets killed along the way. I’m not
