Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 1: Sympathy for the Devil
Do I have sympathy for the devil? No, actually; I don’t think I do. It seems like the devil—Lucifer—has gotten everything he wanted in this situation.
I do have sympathy for that guy Nick though. His wife and kid are dead, and now Lucifer is going to be literally inside him. He has no idea the kind of agony—physical and psychological—he’s about to endure.
Anyway, we cover a lot of plot in this episode. First of all we learn that Sam and Dean were saved from Lucifer. I assumed that would happen, but it’s still good to see it confirmed. We also learn that Cas was destroyed by the other angels, although he has somehow been resurrected. (Which is good, because I have a feeling that we’re going to need Cast to stop the apocalypse).
Most importantly, we learn that Dean is Michael’s Sword, meaning that he’s supposed to be Michael’s vessel so the angel can use Dean’s body to destroy Lucifer. Ew, am I right? I guess this is why the angels tried so hard to save Dean from hell. They couldn’t just do something kind and good for once, no, of course not!
We also learn that the demons are still trying to kill Dean because he is Michael’s vessel. (It never ends for Dean, does it?). So, I imagine THAT will cause some issues this season. Speaking of demons, how crazy was Bobby’s possession scene?
First of all, I’m shocked that Bobby can be possessed. I assume he has the tattoos and amulets just like Sam and Dean, so how did the demon get inside him? I hope they explain that at some point. I also felt terrible when possessed Bobby told Sam that he didn’t want anything to do with him. Man, that cut DEEP!
However, my favorite part was the Supernatural super-fan showing up to stroke Sam’s chest. Creepy? Yes. Terrible fan-fiction writer? For sure. Hilarious? Definitely. Although I’m dying to know why Dean didn’t meet her expectations. What, was he too beautiful? Too perfect? Let me know what you think in the comments.
