Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 14: Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie

This episode was disturbing...but also fun? Like, I don’t know how else to describe being impaled by a unicorn. In case you missed it, in this episode the Winchesters investigate a string of strange deaths and discover that children’s worst fears are coming to life and killing their parents. (I know, I can’t imagine what child would be afraid of a unicorn either). They trace the deaths back to Plucky Pennywhistle's, which seems to be kind of like Chuck E. Cheese. It turns out that one of the employees basically went crazy because he didn’t get a promotion and decided to use hoodoo to murder parents that he didn’t like. He tries to kill Sam too (using killer clowns!!!), but fortunately Dean is able to stop him in time. However, the clowns do explode, covering Sam with glitter, which, I gotta say, was pre-tty hilarious. Dean had the line of the episode with this one: “You look like you got attacked by some PCP-crazed strippers.” Like I said, this episode was kind of dark, but also en

Review: The Last Kingdom Season 4 Episode 5

Man, was that ever DRAMATIC! Maybe this is going too far, but I think this was my favorite episode of season four so far. It gave me anxiety and it made me angry, but I feel like the plot is really moving along now, and all of those things are good when it comes to television, right? First of all, I have to give some props to my girl Stiorra (I believe that means Star, by the way. It's a great name), she's kicking butts and taking names and doing it all with a fabulous hair style. It's too bad that the laws and norms of the time wouldn't allow Uhtred to make Stiorra his heir because she's super smart and clever, and I bet she would be a great leader. So, basically, a chip off the old block, right? Out of all Uhtred's children, I think she's the most like him. While we're on the subject of Stiorra, I want to take a minute to chat about the theme of the episode, which I think is women trying to take control of their own lives. As we've learned, ninth c

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 13: The Slice Girls

Well, this episode was FASCINATING. I’m not sure why, but it really drew me in for some reason. I was genuinely super interested in the Amazon society, and I wanted to learn more about it. Maybe I need to watch the Wonder Woman movie or something. In case you need a recap, Sam and Dean arrive in Seattle to investigate a series of extremely weird, ritualistic murders. They discover that the killings are being committed by the Amazons, a tribe of warrior women who have super strength. It turns out that the Amazons can only reproduce if the child (which grows up super quickly) kills her father. Unfortunately, Sam and Dean only learn this after Dean mates with an Amazon. (Oops!) Dean’s daughter shows up to kill him, and, naturally, things get messy. I did think that it was really tragic that Sam needed to kill Dean’s daughter. Part of me really wanted to believe that she did want to get away from the Amazons. I was half hoping that she could start a new life, but I guess the lesson is: onc

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 12: Time After Time

Man, Dean looked good in that suit, didn’t he?  I hope the network used the promo shots from that episode to promote the show; I would totally buy a poster with Dean dressed up in his 1940s clothes. Anyway, now that we’ve gotten the fashion portion of this commentary out of the way, I should tell you that I had never heard of Eliot Ness or the Untouchables before, so a lot of stuff in this episode went right over my head. However, I found this episode to be pretty charming regardless. I always love the time travel plots. They’re endlessly entertaining. In case you need a recap, in this episode Sam and Dean find themselves hunting the god Chronos. All is going well until Dean gets pulled back into the past with Chronos. Sam and Dean spend the episode hunting the god from different centuries until Sam manages to bring Dean back to the present, killing Chronos in the process. I just hope the scuffle didn’t mess up Dean’s suit. I was also glad to see Jody Mills back in the show. I really

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 11: Adventures in Babysitting

So, Bobby really is dead, huh? I’m not going to lie, I find that to be really depressing. Lately, Sam and Dean are losing literally everybody. At this rate, we’re not going to have any supporting characters left, and losing a father figure is doubly depressing. Although, I do think this episode was kind of an homage to Bobby, as the entire thing revolves around Sam and Dean saving a father so that he can be with his daughter. In case you need a recap, in this episode a hunter named Lee Chambers is hunting a pair of Vetalas when they capture him. The hunter’s daughter calls Bobby for help, and Sam responds. However, when Sam goes missing too, Dean is forced to go after him, and Dean and the daughter eventually save the day. In the meantime, Dean and Frank travel to Wisconsin to spy on the Leviathans in hopes of getting revenge for Bobby’s death. I’m quite interested to see how THAT turns out. All and all, I did like this episode, but it didn’t stand out to me as one of my favorites. The

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 10: Death's Door

SAD. That’s the only thing I have to say about this episode. SAD. First of all, I NEED to know if Bobby is dead or not. That last scene was very ambiguous; Bobby could have pulled through, but then again he might have decided to go with the reaper. On the other hand, it seemed clear that the lights were going out on Bobby, and I refuse to believe that he would allow himself to become a ghost, so the most likely outcome is that Bobby is dead. DEAD. Guys, I cannot express how much that breaks my heart, especially after everything we saw in this episode. Like, I don’t know how Supernatural can go forward as a show without Bobby. It is UNTHINKABLE. By the way, I think I’ve already spoiled everything, but—in case you need a recap—this episode takes place inside Bobby’s brain as he fights to stay alive. Bobby travels through his own memories, trying to escape from the reaper and get back to the boys. Meanwhile, the Winchesters are in the hospital, waiting to see if Bobby survives. Dean does

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 9: How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters

Well, this episode was GROSS. I feel like I say that a lot, but, seriously, ICK. Someone needs to give me a trigger warning the next time Supernatural is going to introduce a cannibal zombie with a cat’s HEAD in his stomach. That stuff is going to haunt my nightmares for weeks! Speaking of which, in case you need a recap, this episode follows Sam, Dean, and Bobby as they travel to New Jersey to investigate a series of horrifically gross murders. They discover that the killing spree was caused by the turducken (turkey, duck, and chicken) sandwiches being served at a local restaurant. Usually, the sandwiches just cause the citizens to become complacent and uninterested in what’s going on around them; however, sometimes they have the side effect of creating cannibal zombie monsters. Who would have thunk it? The boys learn that the leviathans are behind the monster burgers and travel to their headquarters to investigate. Unfortunately, Bobby is shot as they try to escape. I think this epis

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 8: Season Seven, Time for a Wedding!

Oh my goodness, THIS EPISODE! I think I said that episode six was my favorite episode of this season; well, I’m renouncing that today. THIS was my favorite episode of the season. In fact, it might be one of my favorite episodes of the whole series. It was just so FUNNY. In case you need a recap, in this episode Becky (of the Supernatural fan community) makes a deal with a demon to get a potion that will make Sam fall deeply in love with her. Sam and Becky end up getting married and hilarity (and waffle irons) ensues. I should be angry with Becky for drugging and kidnapping Sam, but I just can’t find it in my heart to be mad at her, probably because she’s just too funny and wildly insane for words. I mean, drawing a devil’s trap with blueberry vodka? Come on, that’s adorable. Also, I have to admit that I wanted Becky to get the chance to show off Sam at her high school reunion. Call it a craving for justice or whatever, but I’m always in favor of watching smug people get their comeuppa

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 7: The Mentalists

Well, this episode tickled me all the way down to my socks. A town full of psychics? How adorable! I actually loved the concept of this episode; it was a lot of fun to watch the boys run around psychic town and get positive affirmations (by the way, “you're a virile manifestation of the divine” was the best line of the episode). This episode reminded me of some of the “monster of the week” episodes from earlier seasons, which is a good thing. I always enjoyed the “whodunit” aspect of those episodes. This episode had a particularly good mystery. In case you missed it, this episode revolved around a string of murders of local psychics. Sam and Dean discover that the psychics are being killed by a ghost and narrow down their suspects to two sisters who lived in the town hundreds of years ago. They decide that one sister is causing the murders and burn her bones. Unfortunately, they picked the wrong sister. I gotta say that the ghosts in this episode were DEEPLY creepy. I mean, in gene

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 6: Slash Fiction

I take back what I said in my last episode review. Now THIS is my favorite episode so far this season. I don’t know what it is, but something about a monster turning into someone else and committing crimes with their face is very intriguing to me (and it happens to happen a LOT in this show. Talk about identity theft!). I’m also endlessly interested in Dean and Sam’s run ins with the law, so I guess you could say that this was the perfect episode for me. Plus, there were muffins! What’s not to like? In case you need a recap, in this episode the Winchesters discover that two leviathans have stolen their faces and are going on a shooting spree in their names. While Sam and Dean track them down, Bobby stays with the leviathan that they captured in the last episode and tries to figure out how to kill it. He eventually succeeds (sort of) with the help of Sheriff Jody Mills. (Side note on Jodi and Bobby: If they don’t become a couple sometime soon, I’m going to scream. We need some sort of l

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 5: Shut Up, Dr. Phil

Now, THIS was an amusing episode. In fact, I think it was my favorite episode thus far in this season. In case you need a reminder, in this episode Sam and Dean arrive in a town in Indiana to investigate some mysterious deaths. They quickly discover that witches are involved and make plans to kill them. However, when the Winchesters arrive at the home of the two witches (who turn out to be married), they learn that the deaths are all part of a marital feud and basically act as marriage counselors instead. At the end of the episode, the male witch manages to save Sam and Dean from a leviathan, which he zaps with his witchy powers. NOW. I should make it clear that I don’t support gruesome murder as a way of resolving your familial problems, but, in this case, it did turn out pretty well. Plus, watching Sam and Dean try to offer relationship advice while the witches slammed them up against the wall with magic was pretty hilarious. The bees were a nice touch. I have to say that I originall

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 4: Defending Your Life

I think the best word to describe this episode is interesting. In case you need a recap, in this episode the Winchesters run into the Egyptian god Osiris who is punishing people who feel guilty about mistakes they have made. Osiris zeroes in on Dean, who of course feels guilty about everything (!), and puts him on trial for his role in Jo and Amy’s deaths. Sam defends him, and Dean manages to escape punishment. Like I said, I thought this was an interesting episode, but it didn’t really strike a chord with me. It kind of felt like a filler episode, to be honest. We’ve seen Sam and Dean confronted with ghosts from their past before, so, to me, this episode didn’t bring anything new to the table. However, I did enjoy seeing Jo again, even as a ghost. I was frustrated that Dean didn’t tell Sam that he killed Amy. Like I said in my last review, I was angry that Dean killed her to begin with, but I don’t want the show to drag this plot out. I wish Dean would just tell Sam what happened so

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 3: The Girl Next Door

UGH. I was so annoyed with Dean in this episode. How could he kill Amy?? And how could he threaten her CHILD??? I mean, that’s not like Dean. He’s normally more compassionate and understanding. I mean, Dean is basically a father to Ben; he doesn’t threaten children! I mean, I kind of blame the writers for making Dean look bad in this episode. Dean had no business killing Amy; it’s so HORRIBLY out of character. Anyway, I guess I should summarize what happened in this episode. In this episode, we see a flashback from Sam. When he was a teenager, Sam met a Kitsune named Amy. The two became friends, but when Amy’s mother learned what was happening, Amy was forced to kill her to save Sam. In the present day, Sam becomes convinced that Amy is killing again, and chases her down to stop her. He learns that Amy killed a couple of people in order to save her son, but she promises not to do it again. Sam forgives her, but, as I said, Dean decides to kill her anyway. In the meantime, the Leviathan

Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 2: Hello, Cruel World

Ay yai yai, if the whole season is going to be like this, I don’t know if I’ll be able to bear it! So, I heard that seasons six and seven were not the best, and I’m beginning to see that that’s true. So far, this season just seems so joyless. You know? It’s dark and humorless and lacks all the things that make Supernatural fun. In case you need a recap, in this episode, the leviathans escape from Castiel’s vessel and get loose in the world. Predictably, all hell breaks loose. Seriously guys, of all the gory and horrific things I’ve seen on Supernatural , the leviathans have to be some of the worst. They’re just so NASTY. A group of them take over the bodies of doctors and percede to eat the organs of their patients during surgery. If that doesn’t scream horror show, I don’t know what does. Anyway, Sam, Dean, and Bobby spend this episode trying to get the leviathan infestation under control (unsuccessfully). Meanwhile, Sam is battling his own demons (quite literally). He’s hallucinatin
