Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 8: Rock and a Hard Place

I have to say that I wasn’t a big fan of this episode.

While I liked that it was a “monster of the week” episode (because we haven’t had one of those in a while), the actual plot of the episode wasn’t all that appealing to me. I actually got really excited when I thought it was going to be about dragons, so it was a bit of a let down when the monster turned out to be the Roman goddess Vesta. It just doesn’t have the same cache, you know?

That being said, I did really enjoy seeing Jody Mills back on Supernatural. I feel like she’s a massively underused character. I wish she was a permanent part of team Winchester. She’s just such a super cool, tough lady who can seemingly handle any weird, supernatural stuff that gets thrown at her.

Of course, the most entertaining part of this episode was Sam and Dean deciding to become born again virgins. Vestal virgins, if you will. As Dean said so eloquently, I don’t think you can un-ring that bell.

Seriously though, it was hilarious watching Sam and Dean join a church group and pretend that they want to be abstinent. I loved Dean trying to explain why he didn’t want to have sex anymore. Like that was going to convince anyone. I was also amused that the abstinence counselor happened to be an ex-porn star. That’s really just a perfect situation for Dean, you know? That being said, these were all kind of cheap laughs. Supernatural has shown in the past that it is capable of extremely smart and original humor. In comparison, this episode wasn’t really anything special.

On another note, Dean really needs to tell Sam what is going on with Ezekiel. Sam is going to find out sooner or later, and the longer Dean waits the more upset Sam is going to be (with good reason).

All in all, I don't think this was a great episode, but it had some entertaining moments. Hopefully it’ll be better next time around.
