Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 7: The Curious Case of Dean Winchester

I LOVE OLD DEAN!

Oh my goodness, this episode was so funny!

I mean, it was sort of sad too. And morbid. In the way that episodes of Supernatural often are.

But, mostly, I love old Dean, with his aches and pains and whining. It was comedic GOLD!

In case you need a recap, in this episode, Sam and Dean investigate the death of a young man who suddenly died of old age. They discover that there is a powerful witch in town who swindles people out of years of their lives through poker games. Bobby, who is depressed about his paralysis, decides to gamble with the witch and loses twenty five years of life. Subsequently, Dean decides to win his years back and manages to lose twenty five of his own in the process.

Hilarity ensues as “old Dean” does his best to cope with the aches and pains of old age while trying to continue living his playboy lifestyle.

However, the Winchesters catch a lucky break when the witch’s girlfriend decides to turn on him, giving them a spell to take away all his years. Through a series of twists and turns, Dean ends up getting his years back and the witch’s girlfriend—Lia—admits that she wants to die, having found that the weight of the years is too much for her.

I think the overall message of this episode is about mortality. What does it mean to be mortal in a world of supernatural creatures? What is the value of human life? It also brings up an important question: how are Sam and Dean going to continue to hunt as they grow older? Will they have a chance to grow old? Personally, I hope they don’t spend their entire lives hunting. Sam and Dean deserve the chance to grow old comfortably, perhaps with their grandchildren around them. Although, I doubt that’ll happen.

Anyway, as I said, I really loved this episode, but I don’t think it moved the plot forward very much. I do think this episode gave us a good look at Bobby’s relationship with the Winchesters. It was really sad to hear Bobby say that he felt useless and wanted to kill himself, but it was really sweet when Dean and Sam told Bobby how much he means to them at the end of the episode.

Anyway, this was a fun episode, but I’m looking forward to seeing what’s happening with the apocalypse in the next episode.
