Review: Supernatural Season 9, Episode 7: Bad Boys

If there is ever a Supernatural spinoff show, I want it to be about Sam and Dean as children. Heartbreaking as it is, I’m endlessly fascinated by the story of how the Winchesters grew up. It sheds so much light on how they behave as adults, and the writers manage to infuse their childhood stories with so much genuine emotion. (Plus, I live for the 80s and 90s vibes).

Seriously, I love Supernatural flashback episodes.

I think this one reiterated something we all already knew: John Winchester was a terrible father. The more I learn about his parenting, the more surprised I am that Sam and Dean aren’t more emotionally scarred.

I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir here, but who leaves their sixteen-year-old to rot in jail because he tried to steal food for his hungry brother? That is beyond harsh if you ask me. It’s actually really cold and unfeeling. And, the fact that John only came back to get Dean when he needed him is even worse. Does John not realize that anything could have happened to Dean in jail or in the boy’s home?

In fact, Dean was very lucky to end up in a nice, friendly place. The boy’s home was probably the only place Dean ever experienced a normal childhood! He joined the wrestling team and had his first kiss and had banana pancakes! How adorable was that?

It was actually heartbreaking to see Dean leaving the home before he could take Robin to the dance. It was so SAD! I so wanted Dean to stay with Sonny; he was the father that Sam and Dean deserved.

Anyway, I should probably stop ranting and talk about what happened in the present day portion of the episode.

I thought the monster and the mystery of the episode were really well written; it definitely kept me guessing until the end! This was also one of the scariest episodes we’ve seen in a while. I mean GENUINELY scary.

Did you see that mother ghost’s face? It’s going to haunt my nightmares!

But, the scariest part was probably Timmy’s drawings of his mother’s death. That kind of stuff is SUPER disturbing in my opinion. His kiddy drawings of a fiery explosion were straight out of a horror movie!

That being said, I do think this episode had a pretty happy ending. I’m glad his mother was able to move on and I’m glad Timmy will be able to live a normal life.

I AM disappointed that Sam and Dean melted his action figure. Hopefully, someone bought that little boy a new toy after all that trauma!

In conclusion, I’m really happy with the way this season is going. So far, nine has been the most enjoyable season for me since season five! Hopefully, they can keep it going.
