Review: Supernatural Season 7, Episode 21: Reading Is Fundamental

Now this is what I call an EPISODE. Honestly, it was soooo good. It had basically everything: humor, drama, emotional moments, and it really contributed to the plot too! Plus, there were just so many good LINES.

“I'm in advanced placement. Please don't kill me” is going to be my new catchphrase (just in case you’re wondering, I was in advanced placement in high school, but I was nowhere near as bright and motivated as our dude Kevin). Not to mention that everything Cas said was hilarious. I love him calling Meg to tell her that he’s surrounded by angry dogs. The random weirdness of it all is just perfection.

Speaking of Meg and Cas, their relationship has taken a somewhat adorable turn. I like Meg as the reluctant care taker, even though I am 100% confident that she’s just trying to use Castiel. But still, who would have thought that a muddled, mentally ill angel and a snarky demon could be so cute together?

We should take a few minutes to talk about Cas, I suppose. I think this new, “broken” version of Cas is actually very entertaining and interesting, but I don’t really get what’s going on with him. Sometimes he seems very serious and sometimes he’s very goofy and childish. So, I don’t really understand what’s happening with him mentally. Also, his sudden attachment to Meg and his weirdness with the boys is strange.

I also want to touch on our new character, the Kevin Tran. I am super entertained by him. I know that he’s been kidnapped by the leviathans and all that, but I really hope he’s going to be back on the show. If nothing else, I want to know if he uses his experiences as a prophet to write an amazing college admissions essay. After all of this, I hope he at least gets accepted to Princeton.

Anyway, I think the most important elements of this episode were the overarching plot points. In case you missed it, Sam and Dean discovered that the package they stole from Dick Roman (by the way, my dude Edgar had it right when he said “strange, isn't it, that someone would choose to be named ‘Dick’?”) contained an ancient stone tablet describing how to kill the leviathans written in the language of God. However, it turns out that Kevin Tran is the only one who can interpret the voice of God. Fortunately, Sam and Dean are able to convince him to translate it for them. So, theoretically, they now know how to kill the leviathans, and I imagine that the rest of the season will be devoted to that.

Like I said, I think this season started out slow but it seems to be really gearing up to end on a high note. I’m really hoping they’ll finish strong.
