Review: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 14: Born Under a Bad Sign
I did NOT like this episode.
Don’t get me wrong, the plot was good and everything (although all those jump cuts in the beginning of the episode almost gave me whiplash), it just made me so anxious to see Sam get possessed.
Sam is like a puppy dog or a bunny rabbit, you know? He’s so sweet and cute and harmless (well, not to ghosts, but you get my vibe). This episode was like being attacked by your floppy-eared rabbit (like those bunny vampire books kids use to read back in the day where the rabbits suck your blood (Shout out to you if can remember that)). It was just an incredibly painful episode to watch.
In case you need a reminder, in this episode Sam becomes possessed by the demon that possessed Meg in season 1. Demon-Sam essentially goes on a bender, disappears for a week, and ends up killing another hunter.
He reunites with Dean, who is (understandably) concerned to learn that Sam has gone over to the dark side. The demon-Sam tries to convince Dean to kill his brother, which, of course, doesn’t work. When Dean refuses to shot Sam, demon-Sam takes off to hold Jo hostage (man, was that scene ever disturbing to watch; it’s really tough to watch Sam hurt people).
However, everything ends up working out (mostly) fine because Bobby helps Dean exorcise Sam and then gives them charms to ward off demonic possession. Yay Bobby! For real, Bobby has been the real MVP in this show lately. He’s always helping Sam and Dean, and they never seem to do anything for him. Plus, that move with the holy water spiked beer was genius! I hope Sam and Dean send him a Christmas fruit basket or something.
I’m actually quite surprised that the demon was able to possess Sam in the first place. You’d think he’d be immune with all his psychic powers and stuff. I suppose it just goes to show you that being psychic is not all it’s cracked up to be.
Anyway, this episode gave us a lot of important information because it showed us that there are basically no circumstances under which Dean will kill Sam. I think Dean even says in this episode that he would rather die, which is pretty heavy stuff.
On another depressing note, things are not looking good for a romantic relationship between Dean and Jo, which sucks because I really want to ship Dean with someone (other than his car).
(By the way, they’re killing it with the classic rock references in the episode titles. Ten points to whoever named this episode.)
Rating: 6.5/10
