Review: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 3: Bloodlust

So, the real take away from this episode is that only Dean can call Sam “Sammy.” Just kidding, I had already figured that one out.

Seriously though, this was a TRIPPY episode.

We met Gordon, who is INSANE (more about that later). We encountered another hunter. And, most importantly, we learned that not all monsters are bad! Who would have thunk it?

In case you need a recap, Sam and Dean are investigating some mysterious deaths when they realize that the people who are dying are actually vampires. They very quickly learn that another hunter, Gordon, is in town and is busy killing vamps. Dean and Gordon hit it off, but Sam becomes suspicious of Gordon after talking to Ellen. Sam then learns that the vampires they’ve been killing are actually “vegetarians,” AKA, they don’t attack humans. (For the record, I want to note that this came out BEFORE Twilight, and I found it much more compelling than Edward Cullen and his merry band of bloodsuckers.) Anyway, Sam tries to convince Dean not to hurt the vampires, but Gordon is hell-bent on killing them, so violence ensues. Dean—obviously—takes Sam’s side, and the episode ends with Gordon tied to a chair as Sam and Dean let the vampires escape.

This was an interesting episode because it kind of “flipped the script.” The monsters in this episode weren’t really monsters; it introduces the idea of shades of grey to Supernatural. Previously, all the creatures they’ve encountered have been 100% evil, but now they’re encountering some moral ambiguity. Personally, I like this because it adds a little more texture and interest to the show. Another important note is that Dean is still struggling to cope with the death of his father. The episode implies that Dean sees teaming up with Gordon as a way to regain some of the confidence and security that his father brought him.

Okay, now that we’ve touched on the main points of the episode, let us take a minute to DISCUSS how utterly and completely crazy Gordon is. I get wanting to kill monsters, but Gordon is a few coconuts short of a palm tree. I mean, he killed his own sister. That’s 👏messed 👏up. Plus, he tried to turn the brothers against each other; that is unforgivable. He totally deserved the beating Dean gave him.

Also, if I were Dean, I would have killed Gordon at the end of the episode. I get that the Winchesters don’t kill humans (usually), but if they leave Gordon alive, he’s going to come after them with a vengeance. Maybe I’ve been watching too many gangster shows, but I think Sam and Dean need to be a little more ruthless if they want to protect themselves. Just sayin’.
