Review: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 13: Houses of the Holy

I was a little distressed at the beginning of this episode to see that Sam and Dean are still walking around as themselves. You’d think that after what happened in the last episode they’d try to disguise themselves a bit, but apparently not. I mean, come on, Dean should at least be wearing sunglasses or something!

I’m glad they acknowledged that they’re on the run and that Dean needs to be inconspicuous (which is why he hangs out in the motel room with the vibrating bed while Sam works; how funny was that?), but I feel like they’re not as concerned as they should be. Personally, I would take the situation a little more seriously if the FBI had set up a team just to track me down.

Anyway, let me talk about the actual episode before I get too distracted.

Overall, I thought this was one of the most moving episodes in the show so far. I mean, it had some emotional IMPACT. Like, we get into some deep stuff in this episode. Sam and Dean talk about believing in a higher power, faith, and prayer. Sam seems to believe in God, but it was actually really sad to hear Dean talk about how he sees the world as an essentially evil place, full of violence and chaos.

I mean, it’s not surprising that Dean thinks that way, given what he does for a living, but it’s some dark and heavy stuff. I was really glad that Dean had a moment of hope at the end of the episode.

As a recap, this episode focuses on an “angel” that appears to various people and instructs them to kill others who are doing evil things. It turns out that the “angel” was actually the ghost of a priest who was trying to prevent these wicked acts. Towards the end of the episode, he appears to Sam (who believes he’s actually an angel) and tells him to kill a man who is going to murder a woman. Fortunately, Dean is able to save her in time. He tries to chase down the murderer in the Impala, but, before he can catch him, the murderer is killed when a metal bar falls off a truck. Dean seems to interpret this as an act of God, and it clearly makes him question his assumptions about the world.

It’s actually really moving when the brothers talk about the possibility that someone out there is watching over them at the end of the episode. The director also picked the absolute perfect song for the moment, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”

Side note: Why is the music so amazing in Supernatural? It’s like an all-you-can-eat buffet for classic rock lovers. The soundtrack for this show is too fantastic for words. Even the title of this episode is a reference to a Led Zeppelin song. I love it!

On another note, it was also nice to meet, like, an actual friendly ghost. Well, not Casper level friendly, but a ghost that isn’t malicious (even if he does have a terribly 2006 haircut). But, seriously, I felt bad for the ghost of the priest, and I was glad that Sam was able to put him to rest.
