Review: Supernatural Season 3, Episode 8: A Very Supernatural Christmas

I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or scream while watching this episode.

Like, it was so disturbing, but also really touching and totally hilarious.

I was in literal tears when they showed that Christmas flashback with Sam giving Dean his amulet. Then, you realize that Dean has been wearing that necklace for like twenty years, and then you think about how much Dean cares about his brother and his family, and then you just start blubbering.

Not to mention that the whole Christmas flashback was super moving as well. Every time I start to like John Winchester, I’m reminded of what a bad parent he was. Like, it’s so sad that DEAN had to be the one to provide a Christmas for his brother when he was like nine-years-old himself. I mean, it was kind of funny that he stole a Barbie to give to Sam for Christmas, but it was also heartbreaking. Like, here you have this kid trying to be a parent to his brother and give him a childhood when he never really had a childhood himself. I know he’s dead, but John Winchester should be ashamed of that. A-SHAMED!

Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked.

Basically, this episode focuses on a Christmas monster that is abducting people through their chimneys. Sam and Dean investigate and discover that two pagen gods of the winter solstice have decided to give themselves sacrifices since no one worships them anymore. The boys break into their house and discover that they’ve been eating their victims in the basement (*shudder*). But, before they can free the final victim, the Carrigans (the monsters), capture them. They prepare to sacrifice Sam and Dean and end up ripping out one of Sam’s fingernails. No lie, that was one of *the* most disturbing and disgusting things I’ve ever seen; it may have even been worse than Gordon’s decapitation in the last episode, and that was pretty bad.

On the other hand, ten points to Dean for the funniest line in that scene: “You fudging touch me again and I’ll fudging kill you!”

Anyway, the boys manage to escape when someone stops by to bring them a fruit cake. (Turns out that not even monsters like fruit cake). They kill the monsters and then return to their motel to celebrate Dean’s last Christmas (*excuse me while I sob into my sweater*). I’m sure we were all very touched when Dean gave Sam porn and shaving cream, and Sam gave Dean motor oil and a candy bar, and the two of them finished up the night by watching football.

But, I think we can all agree that the most *moving* moment was when Sam and Dean broke into Santa’s trailer and sang carols. Seriously though, I couldn’t stop laughing when they broke into “Silent Night.” That put me in the Christmas spirit.
