Review: Supernatural Season 3, Episode 5: Bedtime Stories

Dude, this episode was MESSED. UP.

I feel like I say that about a lot of Supernatural episodes, but somehow they always manage to up the ante.

Fairy tales coming to life out of a coma patient’s twisted imagination is certainly the pièce de résistance of a long series of disturbing episodes.

In case you need a recap, this episode focuses on a series of mysterious crimes that seem to reenact fairy tales. You have three builders being killed by a wolf, a sweet old woman who lures “Hansel and Gretel” into her house to kill them, and a “Cinderella” chained to the stove by her stepmother. Maybe you’ve already figured this out, but all of those things are far more violent and vicious in real life than they are in the story books. Pre-tty disturbing!

Anyway, Sam and Dean arrive to investigate and find that the attacks are being caused by the spirit a coma patient named Callie. It turns out that Callie’s step mother attempted to kill her when she was a little girl. Although she’s grown up now, her father—a doctor—continues to read her fairy tales, hoping she’ll recover. Fortunately, Sam and Dean are eventually able to persuade the father that he needs to let his daughter go, arguing that her spirit should be at rest. The father removes life support, and all is right with the world. It’s a pretty tragic conclusion, although Sam and Dean obviously did the right thing.

Although I have to give this episode props for creativity, it fell a little flat for me in terms of emotional impact. I just wasn’t all that invested in the emotional stakes, and this episode didn’t contribute much to the overarching plot of the season, so, to be honest, it felt like filler to me.

On the other hand, I did enjoy the random frog that kept showing up. I’m just glad Dean didn’t have to kiss it!
