Review: Supernatural Season 5, Episode 19: Hammer of the Gods

THE TRICKSTER IS DEAD!

NOOOO!

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Tears! Tears for days!

He was one of the funniest characters on the show! I can not DEAL with this psychological distress right now.

BLAH!

Okay, okay, let me calm down and actually talk about the episode.

Is it just me, or did this episode remind anyone else of American Gods?

I think I mentioned this in an earlier review, but there is a curious amount of overlap between Neil Gaiman books and Supernatural.

Basically, in this episode all the gods from the other pantheons gather together to protest the Judeo-Christian apocalypse. Which is good if you ask me; someone had to do it! Anyway, the gods lure Sam and Dean to a hotel and kidnap them in the hopes of stopping the end of the world, which doesn’t bode well for our heroes. However, the Trickster/Gabriel steps in to save the day and tries to smuggle the boys out while pretending to be Loki. It’s all going swimmingly until Lucifer arrives and kills all the other gods, including Gabriel. Fortunately Sam and Dean manage to escape and discover a final message from Gabriel (conveniently hidden in porn) that explains how to imprison Lucifer once again.

I found this episode to be really satisfying from a storytelling perspective.

Not to mention this episode is good on lines ALONE. There were so many good ones! I love Odin being all like, “Because your beliefs are so much more realistic? The whole world's getting carried around on the back of a giant turtle? Ha! Give me a break!” And the Trickster/Gabriel had soooo many good lines: “So I got wings, like Kotex. But that doesn't make me any less right about Lucifer” and “Lucy, I'm home!” But, I think my favorite line came from Dean: “Well then, people are gonna be asking, "Why are you guys running around with no hands?" His delivery was FLAWLESS.

On a random note, can someone tell me why there was a random commercial for Ghostfacers in the middle of this episode? I’m not mad at it, but like...why?
