Review: Supernatural Season 10, Episode 5: Fan Fiction

Bravo! Bravissimo! That may have been the best episode of Supernatural ever. And I mean that seriously.

Even among the meta episodes—and, don’t get me wrong, I love them all—this one stood out as one of the most ridiculous, hilarious, over the top, and, yes, moving episodes of the bunch. I emphasize that it was hilarious. I laughed my way through the whole thing, from Marie’s mention of her one woman Orphan Black show (which I would love to see, by the way) to Castiel’s anthem about “just waiting here then.”

On a serious note, however, I was genuinely and seriously impressed by the originality of this episode. I love the idea of a Supernatural musical. If it was real, I would totally go see it! (Although, I might leave before the aliens and robots showed up).

It also gave us some really nice moments. I love that Sam and Dean now have a little fake model of the Samulet. I know it’s not real, but it’s a nice symbol of their renewed commitment to brotherhood and the family business.

I also love that we got a glimpse of Chuck! I hope we see him again; I was worried that he was dead or destroyed or something like that. He’s a mysterious character, and I would like to understand his role in the show a little more.

On another note, I was actually really moved by the cast’s rendition of “Carry on Wayward Son.” If this was 2009 and I still had an iPod, I would have that tune on it. In fact, all of the songs in this episode were pretty good! The lyrics were pretty ridiculous (a single man tear indeed!), but the singing itself was pretty food, and the music was actually very well written!

Overall, it was just a fantastic episode, a real testament to the imagination of the writers. And, as the 200th episode, it was the perfect way to recap the road so far. The absurdity of the whole scenario just made it so wonderfully entertaining. I mean, how many other shows have made an episode in which their characters encounter other characters who are making a play about them? It’s pretty unique.

However, I think the bottom line is that Calliope is correct: “Supernatural has everything. Life, death, resurrection, redemption—but above all, family. All set to music you can really tap your toe to. It isn't some meandering piece of genre dreck, it's...epic.”
