Review: Supernatural Season 4, Episode 13: After School Special
WELL.
This episode hit me right in the feels. As much as Dean in those tight shorts was hilarious, this was actually a really emotional episode.
Little Sam trying to deal with bullying and making friends almost made me cry! It was so cute and so sad all at the same time. Plus, it was impossible not to tear up when Sam was talking to his teacher about how he didn’t want to go into the family business.
It’s impossible to over emphasis how terrible Sam and Dean’s childhood was. I mean, the fact that Sam felt as a child that he had no choices in life is horrible, and Dean wasn’t even better! The fact that he had to take care of Sam and be the adult in their relationship when he himself was a child is just so sad! I mean, I know that Dean behaved like he didn’t care that he and Sam were on their own, but it was clear that it got to him.
In case you need a reminder, in this episode, Sam and Dean go to one of their old high schools to investigate a ghost who has been possessing kids and forcing them to injure other pupils. Flashbacks ensue, and we learn that when Sam was at the school he had some run-ins with a boy who was bullying one of his friends. At first, Sam thinks it’s the ghost of the boy who was bullied, but they later learn it was the ghost of the bully, who actually had difficulties at home. They eventually manage to destroy the ghost; however, the whole thing is very sad.
Also, I gotta say that I thought it was so funny that little Sam and little Dean wear essentially the same clothes that adult Sam and Dean wear. Some things never change, I guess.
Anyway, this episode was so entertaining, and I really enjoyed it. Plus, I do think this episode did a good job of making the point that a) bullies often have problems in their own lives which need to be addressed and b) supportive, kind teachers really can make huge difference in the lives of children, whether they know it or not.
