Review: Supernatural Season 10, Episode 19: The Werther Project

Not gonna lie, that episode was pretty disturbing. Like, it was DARK (even by Supernatural standards).

I found the idea of the Saint Louis suicide house to be completely bone-chilling, and the machinations of the Werther box were positively sadistic.

I felt so horrible for Suzie; the idea of her living in that horrible house for decades and spending her whole life guarding that box is really sad.

In short, the actual plot of this episode was really distressing and difficult to watch.

However, it was even more difficult to watch Sam deceive Dean.

Now, I know that Dean has deceived Sam in the past, but what Sam is doing is much, much worse. Not only is he lying to Dean, he’s lying about BIG things, and he’s involving dangerous and unpredictable people. (Metatron, cough. Rowena, cough.) Dean’s lies to Sam were never so involved, and they didn’t really involve others.

Meanwhile, Sam has a whole ulterior plot going on that’s focused on lying to Dean. What gives?

Besides which, I have no doubt that Rowena and Metatron—empowered because of Sam—are going to release havoc on the world in the last few episodes of this season.

In this episode, we saw that Sam is way out of his depth when it comes to dealing with magic and all the problems it poses. How is he going to handle things when Rowena discovers all kinds of world-ending spells in that horrible book? Once she has all this dark magic, what’s going to incentivize her to keep her word to Sam?

I’m also very insulted that Sam agreed to kill Crowley. I like Crowley! I know that he’s supposed to be a villain, but he deserves better. Plus, dying by his mother’s orders is particularly galling.

Besides all of this, I’m not convinced that Dean is on the verge of collapse or madness. Don’t get me wrong, I know that the mark is hurting him, but he seems to be coping for the moment. There isn’t a huge rush to fix this problem. It’s not super urgent right now. They can take their time in dealing with the mark without destroying the world.
