Review: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 3: Dead in the Water

Before we get started, I just need one moment to freak out: THAT LITTLE BOY IN THE LAKE WAS SO CREEPY. AHHHHHHH! When the little grey hand reached out of the water and grabbed this little boy, I’m pretty sure I shrieked.

However, seriously, out of all the Supernatural episodes I’ve seen so far, this one was probably the least scary. It was definitely disturbing and sad, but not really scary. There were just enough creepy elements to keep the tension high, but not enough to actually frighten anyone. This episode seemed to be more about figuring out the mystery of the lake than freaking everyone out with jump scares, which I certainly enjoyed.

In case you need a refresher, the vengeful spirit of a little boy is trying to punish the two people who killed him by drowning their family members in the lake where they dumped his body. It’s a very sad episode because the two murderers were also children at the time and killed him accidentally. At the end of the episode, one of the men who was responsible for the boy’s death sacrifices himself to the lake in order to save his grandson.

The writers really did a great job of keeping you guessing the entire time. Of course, you knew the lake was killing people, but it wasn’t clear why or how until you got to the very end. Sometimes, you can guess what’s going to happen in an episode of Supernatural pretty easily, but, for this one, I was like “what does the bike mean? What’s going on with the drawings? Why is Lucas refusing to talk?”

This was also just a great episode for Dean in general. It was nice to see his softer side when he was interacting with Lucas (the grandson). More importantly, we get to see that saving people really is a driving force in Dean’s life. And, of course, who didn’t love Dean kicking down the door in this episode? I mean, that was such a wonderfully DRAMATIC rescue. I loved it!

The only really lame thing about this episode was the opening scene, when the woman was swimming in the lake. Like, the way they shot this scene made me feel like I was watching crocodile vs. anaconda or some nonsense like that. They so clearly telegraphed that something was going to happen to her that it was almost a let down when something did. However, I think Dean’s kicking-down-the-door points outweigh this particular moment of ridiculousness.
