Game of Thrones Review: Season 5 Episode 4

I think this was one of the first times I actually LOL'd while watching Game of Thrones. (I mean, for real, there's not much fun in this show, but this was actually a pretty fun episode -- well, until everyone died. More about that later). Anyway, I loved this episode; it was action packed and fast paced and things HAPPENED. Let's dive in:

Favorite Moments:

It Pays to Have a Golden Hand: I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love Jaime and I love Bron, and together they make an awesome TV sandwich of awesomeness. I absolutely loved, loved every scene they had together. It was particularly awesome when Jaime was like "we have to save my niece" and Bronn was like "your niece..." and I was like "oh Bronn, you understand everything so well." And don't even get me started on Jaime's golden hand! It was so cool when that sword was coming for him and he was like: "oh, that's right, I can catch that because I have a golden hand and gold is a soft metal. Cha-ching!" Oh, so many good moments! Jaime and Bronn have such a good dynamic and it's great to see Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's acting skills put to good use.

Candles in the Crypt: Again, my bias towards Sansa is showing. I really appreciated her conversation with Littlefinger (not to mention the cool visual effect of her lighting the candles). Not only was it interesting to see Littlefinger's plan (although I don't think it's really his plan, or he's stupider than I thought), but their conversation about Lyanna Stark was very telling.

Father & Daughter: I never thought I'd say this, but Stannis was SO CUTE this week. Like, seriously, he is now officially father of the year (I mean, he didn't really have much competition from Roose Bolton and Jaime, but still). When he was like "you are a Princess and you this is where you belong," I was just like awwwwww. I loved the story about her birth and the doll and how they wanted to send her away, but Stannis was just like "NO." Usually I don't like Stannis, but he has his moments.

The Ministerial Prince: So, this was a great episode for people telling stories about other people. I absolutely loved Barristan Selmy's (this better not be his last episode) story about Rhaegar singing in the streets. Every now and then when you're watching the show, it hits you that Dany doesn't have any family and has never had a 'home' and this affects her very deeply. So, it was super cute to see Dany and Barristan bonding over Rhaegar. It was also good to see Dany being introduced to a new style of leadership. It was so telling when she was standing on top of the pyramid saying, "it all looks so peaceful from up here;" I feel like that sort of thinking is the trap that a lot of leader's fall into. I think that Dany is pretty good at empathy, but I hope she takes Barristan's advice and dives into the problems and issues that actually matter to the people on the street.

The Small Council Gets Smaller: Ordinarily, I don't like Cersei moments, but her interaction with Mace Tyrell was pretty funny. I mean, Mace Tyrell is a pretty funny guy in general; his whole demeanor is just so walrus-esque. I don't think that is a word, but you know what I mean.

Jon Snow Knows Some Things: Good call on not having sex with the evil, she-devil, shadow woman, Jon. Good call.

Least Favorite Moments:

Sons of the Harpy = Not as Good as Sons of Anarchy: Ugh! I'm so tired of the Sons of the Harpy. They're not even good villains and they attack Grey Worm and Barristan Selmy. Not cool. I feel like the Sons of the Harpy were cooler and edgier in the books. In the show they're just sort of lame and boring and only function to kill characters we like. Look, I get it, you have a gold mask. Bully for you. I don't care at all; you're not interesting villains. Interesting villains have character, goals, and aims. I know that they don't like Dany, but other than that they have no motivation and there's nothing interesting about them.

Pro Tip: Don't Mutilate Your Forehead: I have similar problems with the Faith Militant. Like the Sons of the Harpy, they're just so boring. I mean, I guess they're more BA than the Sons of the Harpy, but overall, I find it difficult to be sympathetic or interested in them. Good villains -- like Cersei, for instance -- are people you can sort of sympathize with, or, at least, people who are interesting. I'll give them this though: the Faith Militant is a super tough name. However, I feel like they're all going to regret cutting a big, bloody holes in their heads when those holes become infected. When you have a big, puss-filled sore on your face, maybe you'll rethink joining the Faith Militant. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Look at your life. Look at your choices.

Keep it Classy, Sand Snakes: I like the Sand Snakes. I just find them frustrating. I mean, they have cool hair and cool clothes and are super tough with spears and things but they just refuse to use logic. Why does everyone in Dorne hate logic!!!??? I just want to shake them and be like: "kill Myrcella is not going to bring your father back to life. Starting a war is not going to help anyone. Listen to Doran!!!! Doran is smart. Doran knows what he's talking about." Not to mention, I'm not even sure that Oberyn would want them to go to war over him.  He was killed in a lawful trial-by-combat; that's not grounds for vengeance. Oberyn knew the consequences. Pro-tip: Use logic.

Things I'm Looking Forward To:

Will Sansa Keep Her Skin: I legitimately do not know what's going to happen between Sansa and Ramsay and I'm legitimately concerned for her well-being. I hope Sansa keeps her skin.

Wanted: Dead or Alive: I HAVE TO KNOW IF BARRISTAN SELMY IS ALIVE OR NOT. I JUST HAVE TO KNOW!!!!

The Buddy Road-Trip Continues: Right now we have two awesome buddy road-trips going on: Jaime and Bronn and Brienne and Pod. Now, we're adding Tyrion and Jorah and I could not be happier. I'm looking forward to a PLETHORA of witty witticisms from Tyrion.
