Game of Thrones Review: Season 5 Episode 3
Wow. Not going to lie, the last two episodes were good, but after I saw this episode, I was like "yeah, Game of Thrones is BACK." A lot of exciting stuff happened this week, so let's break it down:
Favorite Moments:
Brienne n' Pod, Back on the Road: Brienne and Pod's treks around Westeros have, traditionally, not been the most exciting moments of the show. However, I have to say that I really enjoyed their scene this week. Brienne's story about her bond with Renly was really sweet and touching, and it really filled out her character. Also, who doesn't love how happy to be punished Pod is. Now that Arya and the Hound have disbanded, I think these two are my new favorite odd couple.
There's a New Queen in Town: Long live the queen -- Margaery Tyrell, that is. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to see her wedding to Tommen (because, as we know, weddings are always so exciting in Westeros), but I loved seeing her dominate Cersei this week. As you know, I'm a big fan of Margaery, so it's great to see her in her element. I also thought it was interesting that the producers decided to show the consummation of the marriage, seeing as that wasn't in the books. However, even that was a cute, kind of funny scene. For being such a blah character in the books, little King Tommen is starting to grow on me. Not to mention that I just loved how Tommen tried to get Cersei to go back to Casterly Rock. I mean, seriously, what teenage king wants his mom around?
Bad Luck Tyrion: I love Tyrion's plot this season, but boy is he always getting screwed. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for him...BOOM! Kidnapped. Poor Tyrion, now he can't even get drunk in a box! Maybe he can't even get drunk at all! I have to say though, the brothel scene was really well done. I love that they had the Dany cosplay prostitute. You know that you're an important character in Game of Thrones when whores are dressing up like you. Classic.
Bye, Bye Janos Slynt: Jon's beheading of Janos Slynt was definitely the most powerful moment of the episode. In the moment when he's holding the sword, you can really see how much he's learned from Ned. There was so much visual similarity here with the scene from season 1, episode 1, which I thought was a good move. You can say what you want about Jon -- and his hair -- but he's a Stark, through and through. We've seen so many moments when Jon hesitated to make a kill. He hesitated for a moment here, but the fact that he didn't show mercy gives you a good idea of what sort of leader he's going to be. He's going to be Eddard Stark. Oh boy.
Least Favorite Moments:
Sansa is Marrying WHO???: Sansa is marrying Ramsey Bolton? What! Why??? If you've read the books, you know that this is most certainly not how things so down. I want get into that too much, but I will say this: I am very concerned about Sansa. Like, it seems very un-Littlefinger to marry her to someone who -- by his own admission -- he doesn't know anything about. (Or does he? You never know with LF -- that's my new nickname for Lord Baelish). I feel like someone should probably have figured out that Ramsey is a psycho by now and that this whole ill-fated venture is going to end in tears.
Valar dohaeris?: I am so, so not about the Faceless Man life. It's not even that I don't like Arya's plot, I just really can't stand all the OOOOOOooooooooOOOOOOOooo ambiguity. A man must to do this. A man must do that. A girl is not ready. Blah, blah, blah. I wonder if the actor's even know what they're supposed to be talking about. So. Over. It.
The High Sparrow: While I thought the brothel scene with the High Septon was pretty funny, I have to say that I'm already so bored with this whole High Sparrow thing. Did Cersei really need to spend half the episode talking to him about his shoes? I don't think so. I know that this is an important plot, but that doesn't mean I can't be bored with it.
Things I'm Looking Forward To:
The Adventures of Tyrion & Jorah: I'm already tingling with anticipation for the great, sassy things that Tyrion is going to say to Jorah. Brienne and Pod may have some competition in the great, odd couple department.
What's Under the Sheet?: Qyburn is a mad scientist on the edge who doesn't play by the rules and he's obviously got something wet and wild under that sheet in his lab. Is it The Mountain? Is it Frankenstein's monster? Is it a lemon cake? The world may never know. Except, we will because there are like seven more episodes.
