Game of Thrones Review: Season 4 Episode 4

Image
I'm going to be honest here, I was sort of underwhelmed with this episode, but I'm going to give it a try anyway. Oathkeeper, an excellent title for an excellent episode. I was so excited about this episode and it did not disappoint. This season has, thus far, been far and away the best. I love it. There were so many great moments, so many great foretellers of future events and plot points. All in all, I see this episode as the bridge to the next half of the season. And let me tell you something; things are really going to happen in the next half of the season. Things are getting good . So, here are my favorite and least favorite moments from Oathkeeper: Favorite Moments: 1. Ser Pounce - I'm so glad that they included this detail from the books in the show. I mean, I think the fact that Tommen has a cat says a lot about him; he's that kid with a bunch of cats with cute names. Like, Joffrey killed kittens and Tommen has pet cats, you know because Tommen's n

Game of Thrones Hair

Image
So, as you know, I'm a big fan of the Game of Thrones TV show, but, I have to say, one thing I don't understand about the show is the hair. I mean, I understand that it's a fantasy TV show; I understand that the producers are trying to create a certain Game of Thrones 'style', but some of the hairstyles on the show are ridiculous! Season 1 Look at this picture of Cersei (right). No one in the world has that much hair! I know that the actress wears a wig because I've seen her natural hair color in interviews, but still, that must be at least three pounds of hair! That's not natural. I don't even know what to say about this picture, it's just so, so, so much hair. Also, I'm not sure whose idea it was to give her the Princess Leia look. She looks a little like one of those African buffalo with the curved horns. Then, she's got the strands hanging down on the sides, why? Clearly someone went through a lot of trouble to coil he

Game of Thrones Review: Season 4 Episode 3

This season just keeps getting better and better! Episode three was a great continuation of the momentum that episode 2 created. So, without further ado, let me present to you my thoughts on episode three: Breaker of Chains. Favorite Moments: 1. Tommen - In the books, Tommen doesn't have much personality, so I'm glad that they're making him more interesting in the show. I think he had more lines in one scene in episode three than he did in the entire book series, which isn't saying much. Anyway, I hope we see more of Tommen, he makes a nice change after Joffrey. 2. The Most Loyal Squire - This scene made me tear up a little. I'm always surprised when someone does something kind or decent on Game of Thrones, but Podrick is just so loyal! It was just so sweet and touching. Not to mention that any scene with Tyrion in it is bound to be good. 3. The Prince of Dorne - I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Red Viper is a spicy individual. What

Jaime Lannister as the Ill-Made Knight

Image
So, I wanted to take a minute to talk about Jaime Lannister. I know a lot of people have said this, but I think Jaime Lannister is one of the most interesting and complex characters in the series. I think he's especially interesting given the cultural precedents that surround him as a character. I'm taking a comparative literature class right now and we've been talking about the knightly ideals of Nordic cultures in literature and their change over time, which I think is quite interesting. It's got me thinking about the representation of knighthood in A Song of Ice and Fire , which seems to share the sort of knightly ideal exhibited in early, Christian Europe. However, it doesn't really seem to live up to that ideal (not to say that Europeans actually lived up to that ideal, although Britain did choose to make Paul McCartney a knight, so they're improving). I mean, within the first five chapters of the first book, Jaime Lannister has already pushed

Game of Thrones Review: Season 4 Episode 2

I have five words for you: What goes around, comes around. All around Westeros, the people are singing 'ding dong the wicked king is DEAD'! I mean, I've read the books so I knew what was coming, but actually seeing it was something different. So, here are my thoughts on episode two, The Lion and the Rose: Favorite Moments: 1. The King is Dead, Long Live the King: This is the scene that broke the Internet: Joffrey is dead. He's dead! The annoying little brat who made everyone's life horrible is dead! This is a great moment for the world because everyone hates Joffrey. The only person who loves him, actually, the only person who even likes him, is his mother. He's one of those guys. And the scene itself was great. Like, I love how he drinks some wine, starts to choke, then drinks MORE wine. Like, that's so Joffrey. Not to mention that, when he was dying, no one except his parents even tried to help him. And HBO didn't even care! I mean, his eyes bled!

The Targaryen Restoration: My Predictions for a Song of Ice and Fire

So, I'm one of those people who usually remembers their dreams, so I can tell you that, about three nights ago, I had this really weird dream about the A Song of Ice and Fire  series in which Daenerys Targaryen had returned to Westeros and was chilling with Aegon, kickin' it on the iron throne, and having little Targaryen babies. Anyway, I woke up and I was all, 'oh yeah, the Targaryen restoration, of course!', as if it was some real, historical event. I can just imagine the history books all the little Westerosi will be reading in five thousand years, "____ years after Aegon's landing, Daenerys Stormborn ascended to the throne after defeating King Tommen and King Stannis at the battle of ____ in what came to be known as the Targaryen Restoration". The Targaryen Restoration - I coined that. But anyway, I'm already totally convinced that that is what's going to happen in the series. I've worked it all out already. I have a very i

Game of Thrones Review: Season 4 Episode 1

As you know Game of Thrones season 4 premiered last night and I am so, so excited! All and all, I think season 4 is off to a great start. Not a minute of the premiere was wasted, every second was chocked full of important plot points and details. It's really is back and better than ever. So, in honor of this fantastic premiere, I'm going to walk you through some of my favorite and least favorite moments. Favorite Moments: 1. The Opening Scene - The episode takes its name, "Two Swords", from the first scene in which we see Tywin Lannister melting down the Starks' great-sword, Ice, to forge two new swords for his family. This single act speaks volumes. More than the deaths of a few individuals, the destruction of Ice really symbolizes the destruction of the Stark family. I'm glad the producers gave that the attention it deserves. 2. The Red Viper - The producers of Game of Thrones did a spot on job of casting the Red Viper. After the catastrophic demol

Don't Mess with Daenerys Stormborn: Some Thoughts on Women in Game of Thrones

Image
So, I just finished re watching season three of Game of Thrones (in preparation for the premier of Game of Thrones later today) and I have to say that Daenerys Targaryen just killed it this past season. Like, seriously, it was the season of Dany. While everyone else is either being attacked by White Walkers or flayed alive, she's over in Essos taking over the world. I mean, at this point in the series, if you think that Dany is going to be murdered or drop off the face of the earth (cough, cough Gendry, cough, cough, Nymeria), you have to accept that you're pretty much wrong. I love Dany in the books, but, thus far, I wasn't super impressed with her in the TV show. This season really changed that. The producers really went out of their way to make her completely awesome this season; they really gave the character a chance to prove herself as a leader. She shows brilliant strategy in Astapor (she really is much smarter than anybody gives her credit for). She

Why the Red Wedding was Necessary: My Views on the War of Five Kings

As a person who read all of the A Song of Ice and Fire books before watching the TV show, the 'surprise' ending of season three of the HBO show, didn't surprise me at all. Going into Season 4, I know that the Red Wedding has, needless to say, upset some fans who haven't read the books, and I've heard more than one person say something to the effect of 'what are they going to do now that they killed all of those characters?'. I, however, am of the controversial opinion that the Red Wedding was necessary. Now, I am writing this blog mostly for the watchers of the Game of Thrones TV show because I think that those who have read all of the books have probably already figured this out. Nothing happens randomly in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Trust me, if you are writing a series that's going to number more than 7,000 pages in length, you go into it with a game plan. Like, I know that and the longest thing I've ever written was 400 pages

A Blog of Thrones

If you've read my main blog before, you probably know that I love A Song of Ice and Fire . I first read the series in 2012 and since then, I've been blogging about my thoughts and theories on the series on my main blog ever since. This blog is the new home for all my thoughts and theories on the world of A Song of Ice and Fire and the TV show Game of Thrones . Valar dohaeris
